The US taxpayer loans to GM will be used to pay off GM dealers who go out of business..

So, with all these dealerships closing, what happens to all the cars?

I personally intend to boycott Government Motors, Inc.

This includes any automaker that accepts a single cent from President Mussolini.

Someone help me out here. Is an auto dealer subsidized by the manufacturer? I always assumed it was like a franchisee. The more, the better.

That’s ok. He can save these jobs for a rainy day.

What a shame this is...

My favorite dealer in the area is a Hummer, Saturn & Saab dealer...WHOOPS! They just built a brand new facility about two years ago...I sure hope their attorney was able to cover them on that one!

Could someone in the car business explain how too many dealerships cost GM money? Too much unsold inventory sitting on lots? Not sure I understand the problem.

Brilliant plan! Cut the number of dealerships and your sales are BOUND to grow!

After all, decreased product availability always results in increased sales, doesn't it?

Heck, close ALL the dealerships! That way, you won't have the expense, and sales should go through the roof!

...the follies of government-run business.

Fascism still sucks.

If the gov’t had allowed GM to go into Chapter 11, we would not have thrown as much money down the hole as we now have. Moreover, we would not have used government money to give GM to the UAW, which is wealth transfer on the magnitude of AIG.

I lay the blame for this at the feet of both government and GM management. GM, Ford and Chrysler were all just schemes to externalize the costs of union socialism. In the end, like all socialist schemes, they ran out of other people's money.

I will protest this horrible debacle the only way I can: I will never buy a new GM vehicle. Period. End. Of. Story. Let GM wither away. It is far better than to have another 50 years of socialists attempting to get someone else to pay for their unsustainable schemes.

Since those dealership employees arent UAW workers, the union doesnt care how many people they fire. How long do you think GM will survive with union ownership? The people that bankrupted the company now have to run it. It will be fun to watch the UAW negotiate with itself.

B4 the “crisis”

GM was selling fewer cars than Toyota, with 3 times as many dealerships.

I’m not disputing what GM is saying about the closings, but my understanding is that unless it is actually handled through a bankruptcy court process, the GM-dealership contracts are enforceable under the laws of the states, where those laws were designed to protect the dealers; and without the judiciary stepping in via an actual bankruptcy, the dealers have usually found favor in the state courts - which is why GM has been unable to close the excess dealers all these years.

Messaging from the late Great State of Michigan, a union state. Who in there right mind would even consider buying a GM vehicle after this debacle is sealed???

What are they going to do with all this inventory from the closed and consoidated dealerships. Who is going to buy a vehicle who’s warranty is backed by the US Government??

The above to a lesser extent goes for Chrysler, only because I would consider buy a Dodge truck if it was cheap enough even without a warranty.

What say you??

Too bad, another event putting people out of work.

They will never remember who did this to them when the time comes to vote though.

Don’t know about Saturn’s profitability but aren’t they non-union? That is the end of that experiment. Note the ownership of GM now ...government and union.

People matter, GM and unions do not. After decades of being a loyal GM buyer I will never buy another one ...the end of GM for me.

Not sure what I’ll buy in the future but it will not be GM. Thinking about Subaru for a commuter, Ford for truck if the Dodge ever wears out and something the wife wants for her but not GM.

Someone tell me if I am wrong. The outcome of this is that between the Government and the Unions they own 89% of GM.
The Bond Holders get 10%.
Under a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Bondholders have precedent over all assets.
Who owns the Bonds. Probably Pension Funds and individual investors. Investors Getting screwed?

Instead of using the billions of dollars for bailouts, they should have used it to fund tax credits. A person buying a car or truck from the Big Three should have been offered a tax credit right off the top of their federal return. Offer a variety of plans - A $1000 tax credit for 6 years, $2000 for three years, $3000 for two years, etc. Figures and timespans could vary. I personally would like to see them offer more. But, the point is to make it an attractive incentive that would get people into the dealerships and move badly overstocked inventory.

This would help the auto industry from the bottom up. Maybe these dealers would have been able to stay open. It wouldn't just pour money into the health care fund. AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE TAXPAYER WOULD HAVE A NEW CAR!

Instead, they offered to let us deduct the sales tax on next year's tax return. Oh, goody!
