COLUMBUS, Ohio An end-of-year college block party spiraled out of control as police fired pellets and used pepper spray to break up hundreds of rioting students who sparked a string of street fires at Kent State University.
Video posted on the Internet shows students hurling furniture and street signs into the flames on Saturday night as a police commando team in riot gear converged on the crowd. Kent police said the party grew violent after one reveler was arrested and students began pelting officers with bottles, bricks and rocks.

I think the mob mentality is just something I’ll never understand.
“Four dead in Ohio.”
Violence, raging, senselessness, destruction, etc.
great.. nothing new under the sun...
Kent St. must be very proud.
Nostalgia time?
Heard a ‘student’(thug in the crowd) interview on the radio this morning.
When the reporter asked if he realized that if you hit a policeman with a beer bottle, they will get hurt.
He responded, “I hope they do get hurt.”
No doubt upset about their future prospects in the Obamanation.
The National Guard troops were all ready worn out after working the highways because the Teamsters were on strike and shooting truck drivers on the road. This song always gets me mad because of the omission of this critical fact, and the blaming of Nixon. I wish they would have shot more of the rioters.

Dejavu all over again.
When did Kent State move to Columbus?????
If it becomes necessary to draw weapons again, they'll hopefully have the sense to shoot the perpretrators instead of the spectators in the background like they did in 1970.
I remember some very hot dinner conversations around that time from. My older brother was a college student at Case Western, and my dad was a hardnosed conservative and WW-II vet. I was too young to get involved in the conversation - I just thought it was cool that the "Army" drove their convoy right past our elementary school on their way to Kent, Ohio a day or two earlier.
I remember some casual conversations around our C ration meals around that time. Since most of the RPG and AK rounds being fired at us were being trekked through Cambodia our attitude was pretty much, “F*$K em.”

Rioters?
Yes, Mark, you know, you are absolutley right.
It happened on May 4th of 1970, and I remember it quite well.
Those protesting college students posed such a threat,
we should have just killed them all,
right then and right there,
and killed all of their parents,
and their dogs as well.
Just nip it in the bud, so to speak, and be done with it.
/sarcasm
Mark,
I personally trained with some of the members of the national guard unit involved;
they were from Wooster, Ohio, if I recall correctly,
many of them were just college students,
who ended up shooting and killing other college students,
and if it was acceptable here to call you a mofo bastard,
I would do it.
But it probably isn’t,
so I won’t.
Kent State, Stuck In The Sixties
Hmmm...
I was a freshman at Kent in 1970 .......... SDS and other groups had infiltrated in late winter - lots of wierdos on campus - could it really be 39 years ago?
Interestingly, there was rioting and fires at the U of Minn.
last night, also. Hmmmm.
I don’t know if the Guard was right, wrong, or indifferent but in my dim memory it seems the incident pretty much ended campus riots across the country. But what I really want to know- do they still call it Kent State? I thought they changed the name to Kent University some time ago.
