Pelosi: I didn't know about waterboarding

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pushing back on GOP charges that she knew about waterboarding for years and did nothing.

Pelosi says she was briefed by Bush administration officials on the legal justification for using waterboarding — but that they never followed through on promises to inform her when they actually began using "enhanced" interrogation techniques

"In that or any other briefing…we were not, and I repeat, we're not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation techniques were used. What they did tell us is that they had some legislative counsel ... opinions that they could be used," she told reporters today.

Earlier, House Minority Leader John Boehner (D-Ohio) criticized Pelosi and other Democratic leaders for backing probes into the use of waterboarding — after failing to raise objections during briefings on its potential use.

"Well, yesterday I saw a partial list of the number of members of the House and Senate, Democrats and Republicans, who were briefed on these interrogation methods and not a word was raised at the time, not one word," Boehner told reporters at his weekly news availability.

"And I think you're going to hear more and more about the bigger picture here, that what — the war on terror after 9/11 was done in a bipartisan basis on lots of fronts. And that bigger story will be coming out," he added.

Pelosi says members who receive classified intelligence briefings are powerless to act on them — or even discuss them with staff.

As a consequence, some members simply skip the meetings, so they aren't "hamstrung" by confidentiality requirements.

... I recall that Nancy Pelosi was one those Senators.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Nancy is not a Senator. She might want to be, but right now she's in the House. Let's figure out a way to get her back on the streets.

President Bush didn't have the balls to challenge Gorelick or the 9-11 Commission. Cheney wouldn't have that problem.

Don’t think there was an executive order to allow it. Just the congressional meetings that Pelosi was a part of. If there isn’t a law that says something is illegal, by default it is legal.

Back in ‘08 there was a budget bill that also included making waterboarding illegal. President Bush vetoed it in part due to the waterboarding clause.

Also looks like she’s playing the “just because we gave authorization doesn’t mean we said it was okay and we thought Bush was actually going to do it” ploy that they use after we attacked Iraq...with their authorization.

What was that old line from "Crimson Tide"..."You don't put on a (contraceptive) unless you gonna (you get the idea)!"

Oh to be a leftist and carefree... /s tag not realllly needed but I will put it there anyway

That's it, she KNOWS there are NO records as they are not even allowed to take notes.

So, she figures she can just lie her wrinkled ass off and it's her word against the truth tellers.

She sees it as a win-win for herself.

I’d like to see the attendance lists for these briefings. I wanna know which jerks didn’t show up to do their jobs, be they Pubbies or wimpocrats!

This is completely irresponsible. Do you want to be a representative of the people or not?? This is part of the territory.

This is the old AlGORE "I drank a lot of tea and missed the collection of loot from them budhist monks" defense.

So it seems like everyone else knew about this but Nancy

http://blogs.jta.org/politics/article/2009/04/20/1004501/did-harman-dissent-from-pelosi-and-goss-on-waterboarding

The link is from newspaper in the middle east. I have heard they have a pretty good spy system. Then again this whole thing may be a part of the public record. You know, Congressional records? But hey, what do I know? I wasn't there and if Nancy Pelosi says she wasn't there, I could just take her word for it. Or we could start prosecuting all those in the Bush years who knew about certain aspects of the "Hazing", "Bathing" or whatever they want to call it. Of course, that would necessarily mean we would have to go after those who were in collusion. Hmmmm... Who could that be? Oh, that is right, Congress. They have the responsibility of and have exercised "Oversight" and "Authorization". Well, that is too bad. Guess we won't be hearing about this after next week. Certainly, this story will die by the next 3 day holiday. Sad. We are safe.

By god the demoncrats have an answer for everything,
I didn’t know, I did know but I didn’t know that, I knew
that but they never told me they were actually doing that,
if I had known they were doing it, but I didn’t think they
actually would do it, the white house dog ate my intelligence homework, etc.

Not trying to quibble... FR is widely used as repository of information and I think it helps if we get our facts correct.

Sorry if you took offense. Have a good day.

Actually, I would bet you that what she says is technically true. The Bush administration did not come to her and ask permission prior to each solitary use of an "enhanced technique". Therefore, she didn't know exactly when it was being used, although she was fully aware that it was possible it could be used at any time.

There are no words strong enough to express my loathing for San Fran Nan, nor any of the other national socialist brethren.
