With the nation in its deepest recession in decades, why would McDonald's pick this moment to launch a $4 burger?
You may have noticed the signs that just went up on some McDonald's drive-through menus: The new Angus burger. It weighs one-third of a pound. It costs four bucks.
In its first-quarter earnings conference call this morning, the company did not say it is rolling out the Angus nationwide, but it did not say it isn't. The company was cagey.
Still, they're starting to pop up -- The Ticker saw the Angus on a menu last Saturday, at a McDonald's on the road from Washington to Morgantown, W.Va.
An upscale product in this climate? What could the company be thinking?

In-N-Out. You must be a guy. In-N-Out is a guy thing. I do like the organization, too, and the scripture references they have on their cups, etc., is kinda cool.
This is a smart move on McDonald’s part. Their menu more or less has been stale with very few new offerings for a number of years now. An Angus burger would be a great seller and a big draw for them.
Look at Hardees - their Angus burgers is what saved them, and proved that people are more than willing to pay $4 for a good burger.
In-N-Out's are always packed, staffed with cheerful english speaking, clean cut kids, very simple menu, good food prepared where you can watch it being handled, what's not to like?
I don’t really care where or what people eat and 4 dollars is not that much for a good burger. The Food police have no right deciding what we should pay esp considering what their hero in the WH pays for beef and pizza.
I guess this is a bad time to mention the In-N-Out's "protein style" burger...

Yep, that’s what the wife and I grab when we want a convenience burger. Tasty for what it is, and especially the cost and convenience. If we want a high quality burger, we’ll make them at home.

The judge threw out that award and they settled for something south of $600,000. The three million dollar figure was based on two days revenue for coffee alone.
My wife’s first job was McDonalds and she still eats there today 20+ years later. Drives me crazy because its like the only fast food she’ll eat and it gets old to me real fast.
Because Carl’s has the six-dollar burger?

Agree. We’ve had the Angus burger since ‘07. It’s the only thing on the McDonald’s menu that I actually sort of like.
But it’s still fast food....
Yeah - interestingly though it’s called “fast food” yucky stuff but if you bought that same burger in a “Fan and Fern” place for $12.95 why that’d be a delicious meal and nutritious too!....</s>off
We have Jack in the Box in Pocatello. I have to drive about 60 miles west to Burley to find a Carl's Jr. Frankly, the Black Angus burgers at Arctic Circle taste just as good as any burger I've had at Carl's and we have two stores in town. Their shakes are outstanding.
My wife and son joined me for a brief ride around town last night on our motorcycles. We stopped by Sonic to get a drink. We have so many choices in town. McDonald's, Arby's, Jack in the Box, Wendy's, Sonic, Arctic Circle, Central Park, Tastee Treat, Quizno's, Subway, Schlotzky's, Jimmy John's, Taco Time, Taco Bell, Burger King and Dairy Queen. That's just the fast food joints. Sitdown's include Chile's, Applebee's, Texas Roadhouse, Ruby Tuesday, IHOP, Perkin's, Red Lobster, Denny's, Pizza Hut, Golden Corral, Winger's and Sizzler. That's the big chains. Locals include Chang's (chinese), ButterBurrs and Uncle Jim's, Tom's (greek), Grecian Key (greek), Riverwalk Thai (in Lava Hot Springs), Puerto Vallarta (mexican), Mandarin House, Taste of India (Indian & Nepalese), Remo's (steak & Italian), Buddy's (italian and great salads) and Elmers. We even have a micro-brewery (Portneuf brewing).
What are we missing? Vietnamese and German cuisine. Idaho Falls has lots of sushi bars, a TGI Friday's, Red Robin and some sports bars. If you can't find it in Pocatello, it's probably available 50 miles north in Idaho Falls. At 75 MPH, that goes pretty fast.
