'Bone voyage' as Pets get Airline

A new airline scheduled to take off in the US fully expects its passengers to behave like animals.

On Pet Airways, of Delray Beach, Florida, all pets travel in the main cabin and owners are not allowed on board - not even in the cargo hold.

The airline claims to be the first designed specifically for the safe and comfortable transportation of pets.

Company founders Dan Wiesel and Alysa Binder say they got the idea while planning holidays with their pet dog.

'Handled as baggage'

"Currently, most pets travelling by air are transported in the cargo hold and are handled as baggage," said Mr Wiesel.

"The experience is frightening to the pets, and can cause severe emotional and physical harm, even death. This is not what most pet owners want to subject their pets to, but they have had no other choice, until now."

This is silly. Who’s going to send their pet somewhere but not want to travel with it?

I would use a service like this if I were moving cross-country or overseas. I’ve moved with my cats in the car a couple of times, and it’s not fun. They were terribly frightened and one of them fouled his carrier. On the way, there was no place to feed or water them, or to let them out to relieve themselves.

Actually, a lot of times when people buy a puppy from a breeder the pup gets sent by air.

My younger Lab came from Portage Wisconsin. Her breeder drove her down to Milwaukee and put her on board a Midwest flight. I picked her up at the Continental freight terminal at Hartsfield. Midwest doesn't have an ATL freight terminal, so she was carried in state across the tarmac on the seat of a baggage tow.

She seemed none the worse for her experience, but she was very glad to see me when I opened the crate.

She would have had a better flight in a passenger cabin, but this airline flies to neither Milwaukee nor Atlanta.

We have bought 3 Jack Russels from a breeder in Florida and had them shipped to Texas on Continental. Continental does an excellent job with pets and only has one rule that some of you might object to. They will not accept a pit bull over 6 months old.

I moved cross country with my cat a few years ago. She was sedated all day. Had a reservation with a pet friendly hotel (think it was Holiday Inn Express) and she recovered enough to get a good meal and use the litter box. Next morning, another sedative and back on the road. I would never travel more than a few hours with cats without them being sedated.

Well, Hubby got a job here in Ohio, and I had to stay home and pack the house. He drove here from California and couldn't take the cats, so we flew them through a pet moving service.

But you're right. I wanted to travel with them! I cried when they left. So did they. It was unpleasant.

I would never travel more than a few hours with cats without them being sedated.

My father, a physician, would sedate our dog before putting her in a cargo cage on the plane. He didn't have to go to a vet or pet store - he simply grabbed some of the supplies from his own cabinet, drugs & syringes, & administered the shots himself.
