Governor Says Texas Can Leave Union If It Wants (with audio)
Houston Chronicle ^ | April 15, 2009

"Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that," Perry said. "My hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention. We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, who knows what may come of that."

We can drill wherever we want off the Gulf Coast of Texas.

.......we would have to expel all the liberals .....

A more harsh treatment might be more in order.

“Perry seems to thrive in selling us out.”

That was your quote. Im up here in Upstate N.Y., leave the union or not doesn't matter to me. We simply ignore or dismiss our governors when they start acting loco.

“That was your quote.”

Whoops, sorry. This has been a busy night. We’ll, hopefully, dispose of Perry soon enough. He’s now done his job.

In 1919 Texas and Oklahoma almost went to war over lands in the Red River bottom around Wichita County, Texas. Federal troops had to separate the NG troops from both states to keep them from starting a war. Federal Judge Delano had to rule on the issue and stop the impending war. I believe if Texas tried to secede, it’d get nasty from the Federal side...

I knew I would eventually hear about secession in polite company but I didn’t expect it come out of the mouth of the Governor.

Go Texas...and you may take that as you like.

Perry said Texas has the right to secede.

If I remember correctly, after the original colony's declared independence and became the fledgling United States, new states were added by subdividing territorial land after (sometimes long after) such land was acquired through treaty and/or purchase. So the route to statehood was from wilderness to territory to state.

Texas was unique in that it was the only candidate for statehood to have been an independent Republic when it chose to align itself with the nascent United States. They also ask for and got an "escape clause" to allow themselves to withdraw from that union at their discretion.

GtG

That is well known, and has nothing to do with my comment. There have been rich discoveries in deeper waters off the the Gulf coast, and even more oil can be produced than at present once those deeper waters are put into production.

******** “I seem to recall that Texas already left the Union and it did not work out all that well” *******

So far as that goes, we seem to have recovered faster/better than the rest of the States involved in that War.

We will check YOUR papers carefully before you are allowed to immigrate.

Agree...any derogatory comments must eliminate one from consideration...unless they can prove that they home school.

Did a bit more digging :
"The annexation resolution (adding Texas as a state) has been the topic of some historical myths—one that remains is that the resolution granted Texas the explicit right to secede from the Union. This was a right argued by some to be implicitly held by all states at the time, up until the conclusion of the Civil War."

So the "War of Northern Aggression" caulked up that loop-hole for all time, not only for Texas but for all of the states...

GtG

****** “There are no viable areas in Texas that are off limits to E&P” *****

Offshore there is, as an Independent Nation we could drill where Mexico, China and Cuba do now

With our long common borders, all core members of the “oil patch” and large agricultural interests, Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma have too much in common not to band together.
This is not to mention the love of collegr football!

“Do you seriously see and hippies or fi-fi NYC types volunteering for uncle O to bring them back in?”

That is the role the new immigrants to play. Having no conception of separation of powers, states rights and taking money from the stupid "yanques" and an everlasting love for the party that allowed them in, they will support Obama to the hilt.

Thanks stockpirate.

Our Texas governor is still shakin' the trees. I gather in an effort to see what might fall out. I'm a little surprised but genuinely gratified he's staked out a position that most conservatives, including myself, wanted ANY State to take, but coming from Texas, as I hoped it might is, well, just sweet! JMO, but rumblings emanating from Texas WILL raise some eyebrows in DC. DC, man the lifeboats! A tsunami is coming!

Texas Governor Rick Perry has re-entered the room!

I hope Perry is serious and starts getting serious about illegal immigration.

TX should also pass a law demanding proof of NBC for POTUS election.

If TX left the union without firing a shot at anybody do you think US servicemen would shoot at them? I really doubt it.

I don't know...they did for Stinkin Lincoln.
