Good news: GOP Senate committee to back Specter over Toomey

posted at 4:35 pm on April 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

Like Jay Cost says, the party apparatus almost always supports the incumbent in a primary challenge for the simple reason that the incumbent’s almost always more likely to win the general. That’s why Bunning might be headed under the bus in Kentucky while Benedict Arlen’s still on board. Toomey probably can’t beat a Democrat in Pennsylvania, which makes the question here simple: Would you rather be stuck with Specter for another six years or is the schadenfreude of seeing him go down sweet enough to be worth losing the filibuster?

Cornyn’s made his decision:

“My job as head of the NRSC is to guide the GOP back to a majority in the Senate,” wrote Cornyn in a letter to Pennsylvania Republicans. “I can’t do that without Arlen Specter. With him as our nominee, I can target our campaign resources toward beating Democrats and growing the Senate Republican Conference.”

The implication of those lines is clear: if Toomey is the Republican nominee next November, “campaign resources” may not flow from Washington to Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile, here’s the latest from the guy who’s going to help us build that new “Republican” majority:

The competitive Democratic primary between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama last year spurred tens of thousands of Pennsylvania Republicans to switch their registration to Democratic. Specter is openly encouraging them to switch back, even telling a group of retailers he met with Monday in Philadelphia, “I don’t know if there are any Democrats in this room. If there are, I’m going to need you to become Republicans, Republicans at least for a day.”

Head on over to the NRSC’s donation page in case you feel moved to help re-elect someone who’s been reduced to begging Democrats to cross over and vote for him. Exit question: Does this give Steele an opportunity to firm up his own conservative cred? Some of the RNC’s rank and file want to see Specter punished and Steele fancies himself enough of a maverick to flirt publicly with the idea of supporting primary challenges. Why not give money to Specter and Toomey, as a symbolic show of support for the latter? The base would appreciate it, especially in contrast with Cornyn.

Well Mr. Cornyn, as a reliable Republican voter in PENNSYLVANIA, I can tell you that I will not vote for Mr. Spectre (mispelling intentional). Any person who would willingly vote for a Trillion Dollars of pork to simply go along to get along and plunge my children and grandchildren’s generations into eternal poverty to pay off liberal nonsensical debt not only has no business in the Senate, but has violated the very oath to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States that they take to hold that position.

I assure you, that I will do everything in my power to ensure that every Republican in Pennsylvania will be voting against Spectre in the coming primary. I’ve had enough of cowards and siccophants using the power of government to destroy the people that is meant to serve. Mr Spectre is a traitor, and I don’t care how much the inside the beltway boys in DC want to back him, he will not get one ounce of support from me. I have voted for this self serving individual for the last time.

Spectre is no counter voice to the liberal destructive mantra that is running our government now, keeping him in the seat serves absolutely no practicle purpose.

Better a Democrat than a Rino.

With Spectre there is no Filibuster. He will vote with the democrats anyway.

If the RNC is this stupid I need to go register as an Independent.

Ever notice that you never see or hear of any Specter or McCain types in the Democrat Party. They are immediately smacked down by the socialists who run that corrupt organization. Would-be "DINOs" are quickly threatened, shut-up and marginalized by the party potentates.

It has been apparent to me for some time that the occasionally conservative Republican Party is thoroughly infiltrated ideologically with Democrat socialistic liberals posing as conservatives.

This from the schmuck who is open to discuss with Democrats so-called “immigration reform”, A.K.A. AMNESTY FOR ILLEGALS!

He does raise some valid points, though. When Specter and Santorum were the two U.S. Senators from Pennsylvania it was perfectly OK to have Toomey run against Specter. But having him topple an incumbent Republican (even a half-@ssed leftist like Specter) seems like a waste of talent, so to speak.

If Toomey's prospects for election are so strong in Pennsylvania, then he should run against Bob Casey Jr. in 2012. Or he should run for governor in 2010.

We saw how well that worked in 2008, right Senator Cornyn?

See him go down, and HARD.

After all, keeping RINOS has only served to give the Dems a soft flilbuster-proof Congress.

Believe me . . . these DINOs do exist. You don't hear about them because the left-wing media doesn't like to mention any dissent in the Democratic ranks.

If you need any evidence of this, just consider this: one of the biggest issues for the Democratic establishment in 2008 was the so-called "card check" legislation that had been backed by hundreds of millions of dollars from labor unions.

This should have been a no-brainer for swift passage, especially with a Democrat in the White House and strong Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress.

But it has yet to be passed by either house, and with every passing day it becomes more likely that it will die a slow death. They can't even bring it to a vote because they don't have enough votes to pass it.

I live in northwest Illinois, that part which is forgotten in Springfield and ridiculed in Cook County. But, is probably one of the most beautiful parts of the state.

I have no use for brain dead party line voters. That how the GOP lost all three branches of government in 24 months.
