WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Pirates off the eastern coast of Africa fired on U.S. sailors Saturday as they tried to reach the lifeboat where an American captain is being held, a U.S. official familiar with the situation told CNN.

The gunfire forced the sailors, who did not return fire, to turn back, the official said.

The incident took place some 12 hours ago as the guided missile destroyer USS Bainbridge sent a small team toward the lifeboat, said the official.

Looks like full visibilty for the crew is somewhat restricted.....with a good diversion, it should be possible to board this thing.

I know nothing about the protocol for this but: Can't they just send a US submarine to go there, surface just under the pirate boat...turning it over and dumping everyone out. Have some Navy Seal divers nearby to pick up the captain and let the pirates just float into oblivion. No gunshots, no weapons...just a good dunking into the deep to sink or be food for the sharks (Or even pick them up for prosecution). Do the same for the other pirate ships anytime they attack a vessel bearing a U.S. flag.

We really are...four Muslim pirates in a leaky boat. Imagine that.

What I would hope is no matter how the situation is resolved a massive air strike takes out the pirates base of operations. Yes, I know women and children are potential causalities but the pirates put them in harm's way by attacking US citizens.

More than likely what will happen after the situation is resolved is nothing at all.

With Islam, Allah and money are one and the same. Don’t forget that Mohammed was a bandit, and his tribe made its living by preying on caravans that passed through from the more civilized parts of the ME. The “religious” aspect was only to make it easier for him to subjugate places that he had conquered militarily and to make sure that they continued to pay taxes to Mohammed Inc., their new master.

Bambi will be fine with that. Expect him to publicly declare that he is Muslim within a month or two.

That’s what I say—my grandson’s crew is ready and able, aboard the US nuclear sub Jimmy Carter. They have a whole pod full of Seals ready to go.

Awaiting orders from the Coward-in-Chief?

We have to learn to accept collateral damage.

Mohammed was a thief and a liar.

So is his faithful follower, Barack Hussein Obama.

it’s a covered lifeboat. They likely didn’t have anything to shoot at.

Check your mail. I was going to post a reply, but thought “Loose Lips Sink Ships”. (Literally in this case???)

I figure the pirates probably don’t have internet service - but what if their friends on the SATCOM do? Granted, monitoring FR probably isn’t on their daily list of things to do, but....

"WTH is going on? Aren’t their any snipers to off these thugs?"

That is a modern, covered lifeboat. Snipers are trained to never shoot until they can clearly see -- and identify -- their targets.

To everyone actually:
Just heard on the radio news that the boat does have gas, and is now only 20 miles from shore.

Well, the Captain prolly tried to get away whilst taking a poop from the poopdeck. But,,, after that attempt? I’ll bet they’re wallowing in feces inside. Or using a can, and dumping it.

I just thought of a trick to play on the pirates! Send in a phony rescue vessel. Have Somalians on board posing as fellow pirates. All the pirates will think this is their chance to get away. They will not know it is a trap until they get aboard. When the pirates get aboard, shoot them and rescue the captain.
