WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Pirates off the eastern coast of Africa fired on U.S. sailors Saturday as they tried to reach the lifeboat where an American captain is being held, a U.S. official familiar with the situation told CNN.
The gunfire forced the sailors, who did not return fire, to turn back, the official said.
The incident took place some 12 hours ago as the guided missile destroyer USS Bainbridge sent a small team toward the lifeboat, said the official.

It is both sad yet funny that it is Somali pirates that are exposing Hussien as a true weakling as CIC. The rest of the world is seeing it......and one-by-one, people in this country are seeing it.

The lifeboat run our of fuel, hello!!
It does not make sense to me that the fuel tank in the lifeboat from Maersk Alabama was not topped up. Maybe the captain "fooled" with fuel supply to the engine!!!
There is no “head” or bathroom on this particular boat.
The pirates relieve themselves in the ocean, from the deck.
It is not like they stay below deck, all the time.
They were fired on and didn’t return fire? WTF?
That’s creative. I like head games myself. Stage a “bigger fish swaller.” That is, send out a phony ship of some sort that claims to have attached explosives to the pirates’ craft. Have them announce that if they are not paid $2.5M, they will blow up the original batch of pirates.
Then you tell the pirates you will save them from those lunatics if they release the captain...but you have the cash and the bigger fish wants it all and a little more, and what can you do?
At the very least it’ll distract them and wear them down. :)
This may have been their last best chance to do something to save the captain.

Well said, sir. I think your bet is a good one provided Obama delegates enough authority to the people on site with full situational awareness. One the other hand considering the current CIC’s score of ego and incompetence Im concerned the military cant act without his final ok. Those few minutes or seconds can make the difference between Capt. Phillips coming out alive or dead.
And maybe I've oversimplified, but a half-dozen boy scouts would bring more testicular fortitude to the confrontation than our entire state department and current POTUS.

On the sea both your ship and the target ship are moving, all the time. Your ship's movements are the worst. You'd want to be on some kind of motion-stabilized platform. If US warships have none of them they should be built, it's not difficult today (take a Segway and put it backwards.)
If the boat is 1 mile away from the warship then there is zero chance of a ship-based sniper hitting anyone specific in the boat (unless motionless, as I mentioned.) The boat is also enclosed, which makes it impossible to see targets.
On the other hand, I don't need to make these decisions - there are people on the spot who are supposed to be experts in this kind of thing. Whether they swim to the boat and blow its bottom out, or they lob a gas grenade inside, or they surface a submarine, or they explode a mine near the boat so that its occupants are incapacitated, or something else - it's their choice, and my hope is that the qualified people are just given green light to do whatever is necessary to accomplish the goal.
Naturally, after this is resolved the real campaign should start, with liberation of all captured ships, annihilation of all pirate bases, and such. Otherwise we'll have the same situation again, with better trained pirates.
