Electricity Grid in U.S. Penetrated by Spies

WASHINGTON -- Cyberspies have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, according to current and former national-security officials.

The spies came from China, Russia and other countries, these officials said, and were believed to be on a mission to navigate the U.S. electrical system and its controls. The intruders haven't sought to damage the power grid or other key infrastructure, but officials warned they could try during a crisis or war.

This might make some sense if Obama would not just mess things up.

Perhaps I’m just a wee bit paranoid. Everything the guy does seems sinister to me.

Notice when they trot out security as an issue they quote current and “former” officials. I’d guess that a lot of these former officials are from the Clinton administration.

Instead of “Terrorism” they’ll say “Sabotage”

There is now a small group of Republican Congressmen who want to require that all activity on “internet communication services” (including your personal home wireless router even if password protected) be logged for two years. This means your old wireless router will have to be tossed as it has no hard drive. Sometimes I wonder if the tin foil hats of the Rats and Pubs deserve each other.

LOL, probably the first time in my life I have been first and it had to be a subject I know little about.

grant the president emergency powers over control of the grid systems and other infrastructure.

Yeah what could go wrong with that?

After immediate panic, I read the article, and realized that this could be to scare us into giving up our internet freedom in the name of “security”.

So, what do we all think. Is this FUD or a real threat?

I don’t disagree with you in the slightest.

It’s a good idea to have a plan so you can live off the grid for at least a month. I have well water, so when the electricity’s off, we have no water. I’ve store up extra food and have invested in some 55 gallon drums for an emergency water supply.

I wish I could afford a back up hand pump for my water system, but that will have to wait for another day. Just paid my taxes, you know.

I suspect either way they are determined to take our internet freedom.

After about five days off the grid, hungry people will be driving trucks through the front door of Albertsons/Safeway/Acme. After another five, they’ll be roaming the neighborhood. A month? Sarajevo.

I cannot have a well as I am in the city. I have stored up extra food but I need to do water as well. I can live without lights but living without the computer might put me in a real poor state of mind.

I hope the answer to this problem is not smart grids...

During a wind caused 48-hour power outage a couple years ago, my internet continued just fine. I powered the PC and DSL modem from an inverter off the troock. It was weird, I could Google but I had no lights in the house.
