Sen. Arlen Specter’s decision to come out against the Employee Free Choice Act might have come at just the right time.

The Pennsylvania Republican trails former Rep. Pat Toomey by double digits in the first head-to-head poll of their ensuing primary match-up.

Can Toomey win?

Yes - Toomey can win, for the following reasons:

*See latest Quinnipiac poll - 41T-27S. A closed primary, coupled with a "sore loser" law, leaves Specter in serious trouble - especially in a non-presidential election year when voting % will be down. The hard core will be voting, not the mushy middle.

*In the general, Pat was a three-time congressman from a 'Rat majority district in the Lehigh Valley that voted 'Rat in each Prez election. He won each time by a larger margin than before. The reason is his ability to communicate conservative principles in a way to make them appealing to non-conservative and non-ideological voters.

*The 'Rats could still throw a monkey wrench into this if Fast Eddie jumps into the race at the last minute (he is term-limited as governor). Otherwise, all 'Rats showing interest in running have zero name recognition. Toomey sweeps the T and wins Pittsburgh, while his Eastern PA connections allow him to limit the damage in Philly.

Regards -

OO

He will act like a conservative to get re-elected, then screw conservatives.

I hope he's already done that one too many times and the Pennsylvania conservatives won't get fooled again.

It's long past time for Specter to take a hike.

Can Toomey win statewide? I would HATE to see Rep. “Baghdad Murphy” become a senator.

Can Toomey win?

In the primary? Possibly. In the general? What difference does it make? The seat is currently held by a liberal anyway.

Don’t worry, 3-4 useful idiots will jump in and split the conservative vote.

Snarlin Arlin will be saved by well meaning morons.

Is there a chart somewhere here on Free Republic of EVERY INCUMBENT up for reelection, be it Democrat or Republican?

DeMint is up for re-election in 2010, but I see no reason for South Carolina to get rid of him.

McCain, on the other hand...but hey, as an Arizona Freeper, it's your right and privilege to dump the sorry bastard.

Is Toomey officially running yet? I want to send him a contribution to fight Snarlin’ Arlen.

You mean like this?
A conservative activist who ran for Pennsylvania governor three times in the 1990s says she will challenge Arlen Specter for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate next year. Peg Luksik, of Johnstown, said Tuesday she is not deterred by the prospective candidacy of former congressman Pat Toomey. Toomey, a fellow conservative who narrowly lost to Specter in the 2004 primary, says he is considering running in 2010. Luksik says Toomey told her last month that he wouldn't challenge Specter. She says it's up to Toomey to decide whether he wants to risk dividing the GOP's conservative wing and allowing Specter to win a sixth term.

I was wondering why Spec changed his position on this. If only McCain won he could protect Spec like GWB did.

Excellent observations. Toomey has done a bang-up job as the President of Club for Growth. He is exactly the type of communicator which the Gelding Old Party needs.

FWIW, our state house district has been occupied by moderate democrats ever since it was created in 1969. In 2008, we elected Tim Krieger, a Club for Growth backed Republican. When we met Tim at his office opening, he told me that he felt the turning point in his narrow win was when his opponent tried to smear Club for Growth as an extremist organization. We're in the opposite corner of the state and got a good look at Pat Toomey in 2004. We liked what we saw.

The last statewide election Peg Luksik ran was as a candidate of the Constitution Party. I think her entry is actually a plus for Pat Toomey because he can effectively ignore her in the primary and use her for proof that he is a moderate in the general election because “the extreme conservative lost to me in the primary election.”

My donations only go to real Republicans, not trojan horses. From now on, they vote with the Dems one single time on something I don’t agree with, they get no donations.

McCain..yea, he’s ours. Just yesterday I received an email asking for money. I ALWAYS write back something to the effect of...MOVE OVER, OLD MAN...you had your chance. I will work ferociously and give lots and lots of money to make sure you are NOT reelected.” I don’t know if it’s read, but it sure makes me feel better!
