Former Soviet Union leader talks about change

SARASOTA – Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev sees parallels between the Soviet Union of 1985-91 and the United States today.

“The election of Barack Obama represents the fact that the American people as a whole want change,” said Gorbachev at a press conference before the first of his two lectures Monday as part of the Ringling College Library Association’s 2009 Town Hall series.

“Your country needs perestroika of course, a perestroika of your own.”

Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his efforts to end the nuclear arms race and Communist rule in Eastern Europe. His leadership coined the words perestroika (governmental restructuring) and glasnost (political openness) that led to fundamental changes in the Soviet Union and to the end of the Cold War.

Speaking in Russian with a translator in the wings of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Gorbachev, 78, spent much of his allotted time reviewing the history of Russia in the 20th century, from the Russian Revolution in 1917 through the Lenin and Stalin eras and the decades leading up to his six-year role as president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the U.S.S.R.

When he became leader of the U.S.S.R. in March 1985, Gorbachev was riding a wave of political reform that began, he said, with Stalin’s death in 1953.

By the 1980s, the failure of communism was evident through the Soviet republic.

“The country was going through a very difficult period, a very stressful period. I understood that the country needed change and that someone had to assume responsibility and step forward in this risky project of changing our country,” he said.

“The challenges were enormously difficult, they were truly awesome... We needed to change the model, to change our way of life. And it was also very important to wake up the people, to bring the people into this process of change. We wanted people to understand that they were citizens, that they were the masters of their country, and this task was accomplished through the policy of glasnost. For the first time in centuries, the people were given a chance to be proud to speak openly, to say what they thought, to require the leaders to reply to their questions. I recall that time, even as we speak, I feel the emotions of that time.”

By 1988, Gorbachev had begun to implement significant reforms.

“We started to build a new system, a system with free elections, competitive elections, political pluralism, and a transition to a multiparty system,” he said. “We were able to say that the old system was relegated to the past.”

At the same time, Gorbachev was working to normalize relations with the United States and the world community.

“We recognized that the global confrontation, the Cold War, was not a normal state of affairs,” he said. The Soviets saw that the world was “interdependent and connected. The world requires real cooperation.”

Wearing a dark suit, a pale blue shirt and a navy pin-dotted tie, Gorbachev maintained a serious demeanor throughout much of his lecture, allowing a brief smile when he recalled the summit between himself and President Ronald Reagan in Geneva in November 1985, where his first impression of Reagan was that he was “a real dinosaur” and Reagan in turn described Gorbachev as a “die-hard Bolshevik.”

That summit, coming just two years after Reagan labeled the Soviet Union as the “evil empire,” marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War.

Since leaving office, he has established the Gorbachev Foundation to address the challenges of the post-Cold War world and Green Cross International, an environmental organization to create a sustainable and secure future. He travels frequently to the United States to speak.

“My feeling toward the American people has improved,” he said. “I like Americans.”

State control only tool to beat crisis: Gorbachev - March 18, 2009 - MOSCOW (Reuters) - Government intervention is the only way to restore the world economy after 30 years of shrinking state influence over national economies, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev wrote in the International Herald Tribune on Wednesday.

Gorbachev addressed his remarks to leaders of the group of 20 leading developed and developing nations who will meet at a financial summit in London on April 2.

"The task is equal in magnitude to the challenge of warding off the threat of nuclear catastrophe that we faced in the late 1980s," said Gorbachev, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in signing arms treaties with the United States.

Gorbachev said the retreat of the state from economic life set in train by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher created a vast financial bubble which had now burst.

"Even so, we keep hearing from those who still believe in the magic curative powers of unregulated markets. But today, people are no longer looking to them for solutions," Gorbachev said in the opinion piece.

"They expect their elected leaders to act. Those leaders must use the tools of government intervention; no other tools are available," he said.

War Games: Russia, China Grow Alliance
September 23, 2005

In foreign policy it’s critical to “know thine enemy.” So American policymakers should be aware that Russia and China are inching closer to identifying a common enemy — the United States.

The two would-be superpowers held unprecedented joint military exercises Aug. 18-25. Soothingly named “Peace Mission 2005,” the drills took place on the Shandong peninsula on the Yellow Sea, and included nearly 10,000 troops. Russian long-range bombers, the army, navy, air force, marine, airborne and logistics units from both countries were also involved.

Moscow and Beijing claim the maneuvers were aimed at combating terrorism, extremism and separatism (the last a veiled reference to Taiwan), but it’s clear they were an attempt to counter-balance American military might.

Joint war games are a logical outcome of the Sino-Russian Friendship and Cooperation Treaty signed in 2001, and reflect the shared worldview and growing economic ties between the two Eastern Hemisphere giants. As the Pravda.ru Web site announced, “the reconciliation between China and Russia has been driven in part by mutual unease at U.S. power and a fear of Islamic extremism in Central Asia.”

Russia, China flex muscles in joint war games
Reuters: Aug 17, 2007

CHEBARKUL, Russia (Reuters) - Russia and China staged their biggest joint exercises on Friday but denied this show of military prowess could lead to the formation of a counterweight to NATO.

"Today's exercises are another step towards strengthening the relations between our countries, a step towards strengthening international peace and security, and first and foremost, the security of our peoples," Putin said.

Fighter jets swooped overhead, commandos jumped from helicopters on to rooftops and the boom of artillery shells shook the firing range in Russia's Ural mountains as two of the largest armies in the world were put through their paces.

The exercises take place against a backdrop of mounting rivalry between the West, and Russia and China for influence over Central Asia, a strategic region that has huge oil, gas and mineral resources.

Russia's growing assertiveness is also causing jitters in the West. Putin announced at the firing range that Russia was resuming Soviet-era sorties by its strategic bomber aircraft near NATO airspace.

Russian nuclear bombers in Cuba?
July 23, 2008

The media has been abuzz today at the prospect of Russian nuclear bombers being stationed in Cuba if the US goes ahead with plans for missile defense bases in Eastern Europe.

The story has riled the US enough that a US general has been wheeled out to tell the world’s press that any Russian attempt to build another nuclear base in Cuba would cross US “red line”.

The story broke earlier this week, when Russian newspaper Izvestia quoted an un-named source from within the Russian military. He told the Russian daily:

“While they are deploying the missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, our strategic bombers will already be landing in Cuba.”

The quote hasn’t been independently confirmed, but the Russian Defense Ministry added fuel to the fire when they refused to comment on the story.

The prospect of Russian nuclear forces being stationed in Cuba - which is, after all, only 90 miles from the US coast - would bring back some rather unpleasant memories for the US of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, where the Soviet Union under Nikita Kruschev launched an audacious and foolhardy bid to station nuclear missiles on the Caribbean island.

No need to shoot the messenger; Gorby is only stating what happens to be a fact. People don’t want freedom, they want an omnipotent elected nanny that will bail them out of their insignificant problems; I’ve seen it even from supposed conservatives who at least in theory know better. How we wake people up enough to abandon this madness is another matter entirely.

"Former Soviet Union leader talks about change"

"The Communist Party USA views the 2008 elections as a tremendous opportunity to defeat the policies of the right-wing Republicans and to move our country in a new progressive direction.

The record turnout in the Democratic Presidential primary races shows that millions of voters, including millions of new voters, are using this election to bring about real change. We wholeheartedly agree with them."

A Landslide Mandate For Change

Congratulations on an extraordinary history making election!

We can think back with pride to decades of hard work toward our strategic goal of a big enough, broad enough and united enough labor and all-people’s movement that could overcome the ultra-right blockage to all progress. That all people’s movement has come to life, it is dynamic and it has the potential to keep growing.

The election of Barack Obama and a strengthened Congress creates new conditions in our country. There is now the possibility to shift gears and move forward. This new day requires us to further develop our tactics in order to continue to deepen and broaden labor and people’s unity.

There are thousands of experiences that we all have had in these momentous days, some large, some small, all of which express the enormity of change in thinking and readiness for involvement that is underway and that steels us for the battles ahead.

The tears of joy we all shared as crowds gathered to watch the election results here and throughout the world dramatize the new moment we are in.

Saul Alinsky on "Change"...
From Rules for Radicals, Alinsky outlines his strategy in organizing, writing:

"There's another reason for working inside the system. Dostoevsky said that taking a new step is what people fear most. Any revolutionary change must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward change among the mass of our people. They must feel so frustrated, so defeated, so lost, so futureless in the prevailing system that they are willing to let go of the past and change the future. This acceptance is the reformation essential to any revolution."

The drumbeat goes on. Public opinion is being softened.
