Dead toddler was dumped along freeway

March 19, 2009

A toddler whose mother said the girl had been abducted during a violent attack was dumped near a San Fernando Valley freeway, according to L.A.

County sheriff's homicide detectives who are investigating the 18-month-old girl's death. [Updated 4 p.m.: An earlier version of this post said the girl was 30 months old. The Sheriff's Department reports that she was 18 months old.]

Authorities said the body was dumped near the 5 Freeway sometime in the last 24 hours. The Sheriff's Department spent most of last night trying to find the child.

But detectives found several inconsistencies in the mother's story and received information that suggested Emma Leigh Barker was in Mission Hills and was dead.

The mother is cooperating with investigators and is not now a suspect. But Lt. Pat Nelson told reporters that might change as the investigation continues.

I should have said "I read the story". Unfortunately read and read (red) are spelled the same.

This: Mom picked up somebody and they took the baby? was speculation on my part. I should not post when tired.

I have an 18 month old granddaughter...my heart breaks when I see this kind of thing. My prayers for that baby.

The child is in HEAVEN where she will only know peace and joy now. The monster that did this will be made to answer. God WILL make all things right.

A rhetorical question here, how did the mother know where to tell the police to find the baby?

"Stacy Barker told detectives that she was at Lancaster City Park on Wednesday sometime after 5 p.m. placing her daughter in a car seat and was knocked unconscious after hitting her head on the steering wheel.

She told detectives that she awoke about 10:30 p.m., slumped over in the seat of her car at a Palmdale park-and-ride, and discovered Emma was missing. The mother's brother called authorities, and deputies were dispatched to the Avenue S Park-n-Ride.

Wait a minute. You have to take the 14 to the 5 from Palmdale/Lancaster to get to Santa Clarita/Mission Hills which is ~ 30 miles south over mountains doing 70+. Why would somebody dump a body right there along a 10-lane FWY? Why not go north ~30 miles near Mojave to dump a body in the desert instead of going south into a busy area to dump it? And dodge trucks going downslope to get it there?

Mission Hills isn't a war zone yet. Just a few miles east you have Van Nuys and Pacoima where gangs thrive without police interference. Straight up Sepulveda BLVD and past the FWY.

What are you suggesting here? That her story is false and she threw a live baby onto the Fwy?

That was DJ MacWoW’s speculation. Any wild guess is useful. I know the area where the little girl’s body was dumped. And I know where the area the crime happened. I just blow by there on the 14 on my way to Mohave doing 75 to have a great breakfast right on the left side of turning off to get on the 15 to Vegas. At about 6AM. Then go 85+.

Not at all. That's stupid. Achieve useful other ideas. I just know the approximate locations of trouble spots.

This is a kidnap/murder case. You can't be 30 miles away from yourself at the same time.

But she was probably lying about the park and the abduction. The story sounded fishy to even the newsguy who read it this morning. And now she is saying she hit her OWN head and somehow got, in the front seat of her car, from the park in Lancaster to the park-n-ride in Palmdale.

My guess is that she and/or the other person involved were in the valley somewhere when the baby was either killed accidentally or murdered; they left the body there in the bushes by the freeway on their way back up to the Antelope Valley. They roughed the mom up for the excuse — or maybe she just got roughed up by someone for real - and left her at the Park-n-Ride.

I too have had many years fighting infertility and would have taken her in and given that baby a beautiful life. It breaks my heart.

I just dont understand these people.

Why would anyone hurt a child? Some people are just evil.

"And now she is saying she hit her OWN head and somehow got, in the front seat of her car, from the park in Lancaster to the park-n-ride in Palmdale."

Lancaster and Palmdale are only ~5 miles apart on the 14. Forget the newsguy. You have a good guess. But it is still 30 miles south from the Mojave desert. And 30 miles north of one of the worst FWY intersections in the world. With big accidents as a normal occurance. And a little girl's body ends up there?

i.e. A Brinks truck overturned there and 10-12 lanes were stopped because people parked their cars to pick up free quarters. A chichen truck went over and people put live chickens in their trunks. A pig truck went over and so there were free frozen pigs. The beef truck got raided by pick-ups. The beer truck was emptied fast and made lighter, along with the soda truck. Just wait for the next one on the underpass.

Your idea fails because everybody driving the 14, 5, and 405 sees everything going on there. You can't stop there. The body was there for a reason. The question is what is the message?

Of course there is actual evil here. What are the evil people’s objective? There are people involved beyond her mother who killed her daughter. That’s obvious. For what purpose? I want some names. And pictures to go with their names.

Where does the article say that? Was that in another article? I have only read this one.

One of the articles I read said after they questioned the mother for a while information was developed that helped them locate the child’s body.

The latest is the body of the 18 month old infant was found in Sylmar! Not Mission Hills. That’s strange. The bikers around there would have called the cops immediately. What information is correct?

The mother dumped the body. I was pretty certain she had from what I read last night. How sad... so many people would have wanted this beautiful child same as Caylee Anthony.

That is sad. Her mother didn’t know what to do and screwed up. Roxford Street in Sylmar? From Lancaster? The woman needs help fast. That’s a breakdown.

Thanks. If they publish a story about the “accident” that killed the little one, could you ping me? How does one accidentally kill their baby?
