From what I see, the Republican National Committee representatives who picked Michael Steele as their new chairman made a mistake. I think Steele ought to step aside.
It pains me to say it. But it pains me more to watch the opposition party, the Republican Party, spin aimlessly and leaderless, while the Obama administration shreds to pieces, with ruthless focus and discipline, everything that this country stands for.
Yes, of course, the defining moment for me is the recent GQ magazine interview in which Steele sounds more like a Democrat than a Republican. Does a woman have a right to choose abortion? "Yeah. Absolutely." Is homosexual behavior something an individual can choose? "It's like saying, 'Tomorrow morning I'm gonna stop being black.'"
Should we amend the constitution to define marriage? "I don't like mucking around with the Constitution." I guess Mr. Steele does like mucking around with his own party's platform, which supports such an amendment. (snip)
The Republican Party needs a chairman who wants to fight this fight. It seems pretty clear that Michael Steele is not that man.

He’s wanting O’s job in the future....playing both sides of the fence for more votes. Not a conservative...
GET RID OF HIM.....
At worst, he will rally us to get out act together and replace him with someone we like down the road, at best, he will straighten his act up and actually become effective
I don’t see this happening at all, just more division of the conservatives, like what is happening now....
Well, not if conservatives rally ourselves to remove him, at least then we would be communicating with one voice.
Right now, the Conservative Coalition is in a shambles nbhunt, seriously, pro life, pro business, pro defense and pro 2nd amendment advocates pro marriage advocates are not speaking with one voice.
At least, not yet.
He’s showing no leadership at all.
All the more reason padre35, to get someone who we can ALL rally around and then get it together, and speak with ONE VOICE in unison. Get it right first then go after the Demos. But, when he begins to speak out of both sides of his mouth, just another O, and it will only drag the Conservative group down further. Like what he is doing now. Do you believe in his thoughts like in post #20, if you do...your not a conservative.
Padre, I don't think you get the premise. Most of us at Free Republic really don't care what the liberals think or say about us.
That's the way to diffuse the race card.
LOL BINGO! Steele is a CLOWN!
People around here who petulantly, impatiently and childishly want Steele “fired” should’ve supported a better candidate who would've defeated Steele.
It's too late now. We're “stuck” with Steele.
To get rid of him now would be the ultimate blunder.
After his latest gaff last week I sent him a one word E-Mail.
It said “Resign!”
“However, it has become clear that he is a moderate, and even less conservative than he seemed to be.”
He was popular but never conservative. All one needed to do was read some of his earlier comments, before he was appointed RNC chair. I remember reading some of them and thinking, “this man is clearly a RINO. No conservative could possibly believe what he believes.” Now other people are starting to see through the hype, which I think was partially racial in nature (sad to say). Personally, I don’t care whether someone is male or female, black or white (or whatever). All I want is a real conservative!
I liked Steele when he was Lt. Gov. of Maryland. He seemed very committed to pro-life, marriage, etc. When he was selected RNC Chair I was glad. He was the only thing that was keeping me in the GOP. I thought his talk about making the party attractive to people who don’t normally associate with the GOP meant that he would try to convince blacks and Hispanics of the correctness of the pro-life cause and the values in the Constitution. I did not think it meant that he would make the Republican party indistinguishable from the Democrats.
But that GQ interview showed me his true stripes.
There is nothing left to keep me. The party has officially left me. So I’m now an Independent. I don’t know if I’ll bother looking for another party.
When did we become reduced to ad hominens?
Mad posted two specific questions and Steele's responses from the interview that clearly show he is NOT ready for prime time. It is too critical a time in our nation's history for the RNC to be headed by someone so diametrically opposed to the party's position on so many issues. He has no chance of solifying the base, and he has no chance of articulating the GOP message in a way that will bring independents and new voters to the party. Likening Mad's position and/or posting style to that of DU was sophomoric and silly.
Your dichotomy of best and worst cases is incorrect. At worst, if we wait to "replace him with someone we like down the road" he can do irreparable harm to the party leading to losses in 2010 when we SHOULD kick Demo butt. At best, he can maintain the status quo trying to attract the urban hip hop crowd that isn't going to vote GOP anyway.
Not only does the RNC chairman not seem to share the values of his party, or to even agree with his party's platform, but also he is a public relations disaster. The diversionary noise he has created has not only hurt Republicans, but it has helped the president move his ambitious agenda without being seriously publicly challenged.Star nails it here. Steele's incompetence as head of the RNC is helping Zero advance his marxist agenda. We can't afford to give Steele more time to figure it out.
It is only diversionary if we allow it to be, and nothing, next to another Foley type scandal, would please the Dhimmicrats more.
What is helping Obamao advance his marxism “lite” is the Senate seats we lost in 06 and 08, Steele is but a bit player who has not been on the job a month as of yet.
The RNC Chairman is a FUND RAISER and should decline EVERY request for an interview.
Let the politicians speak to the press and have the RNC Chair do his work from behind a curtain.
Regardless of race, creed or color.
Liberal puke Steele has been there for a month too long!
He won an election.
In fact, he beat all the conservative “pukes”.
just more division of the republicans, like what is happening now....
Fixed it for ya....
