HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) A conservative activist who ran for Pennsylvania governor three times in the 1990s says she will challenge Arlen Specter for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate next year.
Peg Luksik, of Johnstown, said Tuesday she is not deterred by the prospective candidacy of former congressman Pat Toomey. Toomey, a fellow conservative who narrowly lost to Specter in the 2004 primary, says he is considering running in 2010.
Luksik says Toomey told her last month that he wouldn't challenge Specter. She says it's up to Toomey to decide whether he wants to risk dividing the GOP's conservative wing and allowing Specter to win a sixth term.

? Who's not hurting.
“If what she says is true the way I read it, Toomey is in Specters corner and will only run to keep her from getting in.”
Toomey will announce in the next week or so that he’s running against Specter. Luksik would have no chance against Toomey, and her presence on the ballot could only throw the nomination to Specter by splitting the conservative vote. Luksik should seek a different office.
Arlen Specter.
I thought it said that Toomy was NOT running.

Don’t start with that weak crap. Everybody here has a right to an opinion on EVERY race.
Luksik is weaker than Toomey period, and this not a last minute entry on his part, the freaking primary is over a year away. Sure should run against black jack Murtha.
He’s made no moves to run for any office. Perhaps burned out after 2006.
I presume he’s opposed (but he didn’t cast a vote for or against since he left Congress in 2005). If he isn’t, I concur with your last sentence.
He’s hurting from cancer.
Toomey is Roman Catholic, and saw the light on abortion about 10 years ago (after the birth of his daughter), and from then onwards he had a perfect 100% pro-life voting record in Congress according to NRTLC. See http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3827/is_200302/ai_n9207545
The reason I asked is it seems to me the Club for Growth used to be an illegal alien cheerleading organization.
I've always lived in TN.
"In any event, I do find Toomey's apparent decision unfortunate. Conervatives in PA would be better served by not having two of their standard bearers butting heads in a primary."
I find his entry a decided relief. Luksik is practically a perennial also-ran. That's not the best we can put up. If Toomey decided not to get in, it might be a different story, but you and I both know Luksik isn't going to win a Senate race in a general election match-up unless the Democrat was a convicted felon or child molestor.
"Toomey knows Luksik has already all but officially announced her campaign. His decision, if true, is counterproductive and appears opportunistic. Pat Toomey is better than that, IMO."
We've been stomping from the rafters since 2004 for Toomey to seek a rematch. It was his honor to do so. Why would he defer to a second-tier candidate who cannot win a general election all because they declared "first" ? First doesn't mean best or viable. You know that. If she were viable, it would be a different story.
"Your contention That "For us expecting a solid field assembled this early is a bit ridiculous" makes me wonder who you think "us" is."
Us can be whomever I'm addressing. In this case, Republicans.
"Now is the time to organize the effort and work toward putting a united ticket in place. Now is not the time to be pitting our favorites against each other."
I agree we need to be putting forward our best and most viable candidates, but sometimes that isn't always our personal favorite.
It’s a valid question. When he makes his announcement soon, I’m sure he will put out his official position. If he’s a squish or pro-shamnesty, it’s news to me.
No need to get snippy, Impy.
I agree that everyone has a right to an opinion on every race. Everyone also has a right to ask a question.
She should run against black jack Murtha.
Are you saying Bill Russell should drop out?
Oh Boy,if Toomey announces next week then Peggy should think about dropping out.
Honest Conservative interviewed Peg Luksik on one of her latest shows on BlogTalkRadio. Here is a link for anyone interested. Listen and learn!!

Don't speak for me. I'm not convinced she couldn't win anymore than I'm convinced Toomey could. It's too early to be convinced of anything concerning 2010.
Luksik sounds like a one issue candidate to me. She has NO chance to win.
Or is she actually working for Specter, I wonder?
There are rumors that Lynn Swann ran for Governor against Rendell, but there is little evidence that it ever happened. It was absolutely the worst campaign I’ve ever witnessed, from start to finish.
Sorry, I’m testy. I was attacked as a “Yankee!!” from “Obama’s state” by some Louisiana freepers for daring to comment on David Vitter’s electoral weaknesses. I thought you going down that ridiculous avenue, my bad.
Russell is running again? Well he’s lost already and it wasn’t close even after Murtha stuck his foot in his mouth, if there was someone else I’d be inclined to give them a shot.
It’s great Lustik stepped up when it looked like Toomey wasn’t gonna run and I’d like her to run for something. But I don’t care about her and her volunteers feelings, this is about beating Specter and then the rat, Toomey has a a much better chance in November.
AG Corbett is gonna run for Governor as is “moderate” Congressman Gerlach who I wish wouldn’t leave his seat open. Toomey didn’t need to get into that imo.
I’m a little worried about your Governor’s race, it’s switched parties every 8 years for quite some time, that’s bound to end eventually. It would have in 2002 if Schweiker had run.
