British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in a formal address to Congress this morning, announced that Queen Elizabeth has conferred honorary knighthood on Sen. Edward Kennedy, the veteran Massachusetts Democrat who is battling brain cancer.
The 77-year-old brother of assassinated President John F. Kennedy and son of the former ambassador to Britain Joseph P. Kennedy is being honored for his role in swaying Irish-American public opinion during the Northern Ireland peace process. Brown said:
Northern Ireland is today at peace, more Americans have healthcare, more children around the world are going to school, and for all those things we owe a great debt to the life and courage of Senator Edward Kennedy.
[snip]In the Senate for 46 years, Kennedy has survived the assassinations of his older brothers, JFK and Robert Kennedy. He was almost killed in a plane crash in 1964 that left him with permanent back pain. His political future was clouded by an accident at Chappaquiddick. He drove a car over a bridge at Chappaquiddick in 1969, swimming to safety and abandoning his companion, Mary Jo Kopechne, who died trapped in the sunken car.

If ever there was an undeserved honor . . .
May I present Sir Teddy the drowner.
The black Night/Knight of the Chappaquiddick.
Ted should take the queen for a drive over a bridge.
Such as Barry getting elected?
One more reason to abolish the monarchy.
Not good enough. They need to make him an admiral!
Sir Edward of Chappaquiddick
I wonder what Arthur would have done about knighthoods being tossed around like candy.
unconstitutional...but since when did that stop anyone in DC?
TED: Hey, queenie..let`s take a ride, I`ll drive. mmkay”
I present to you, Sir Ted the Lyinhearted.
Alot of Brits have to question this. Gordon Brown probably sat there in shock as Obama requested this favor...and had to pull every single trick in the book to get the queen to agree to this. She likely pulled a dozen problems and insisted Gordon fix them before agreeing to any of this. The curious thing is that Ted is in pretty bad shape, and very likely unable to make a 8-hr flight to the UK to do this ceremony...and based on press info...he’ll be lucky to make it to June.
That rumble you feel are ten generations of Irish Kennedy ancestors are spinning in their graves.
I thought the Brits thought more highly of their traditions.
Who’s next? Sir Blago?
If you heard the partial quote below by itself would you know who it was?
"..swimming to safety and abandoning his companion.."
Mary Jo Kopechne was still unavailable for comment.
