Steele on GOP primary: 'I am open to that baby'

RNC chair Michael Steele says he is "open to that baby" when it comes to supporting primary challengers against the three GOP senators who voted in favor of the stimulus package.

"Oh, yes, I'm always open to everything, baby, absolutely" Steele said yesterday on Fox News' 'Your World with Neil Cavuto'.

Republican Sens. Arlen Specter (Pa.) and Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins (Maine) all gave the thumbs up to the Obama stimulus plan, making conservatives vent their wrath on the blogs, television and talk radio. Specter is the only one of the three up for re-elect in 2010.

Steele said he is not going to fight the conservative wrath within each members states, proving that he really is the new sheriff in town.

This guy’s way too swayve and deboner to be genuine. I think alot of people will be misled by him. He’s not hard-edged and he’s way too concilliatory to be of any value to conservatives, irrespective of his color. He’s the “same- old,” re-packaged for popular consumption!

I just think it sounds juvenile. It makes me think of Austin Powers, “Yeah, baby!”

You may not like it the other way around, with local groups being forced to do what the NATIONAL GOP says to do.

As I ponder your comment, let me relate a story. I live in Delaware, a schizophrenic state if ever there was one. I got an email from the state GOP, proudly stating that Joe Blow from the Wilmington city council would becoming a Republican within the week.

So proud they were!!! Joe Blow said, for a comment, that he would "always be a Democrat" and right there I blew a gasket. The pubs were so PROUD to have recruited an admitted forever Democrat to their ranks, I guess for the better offices, suntans and fine head hairs of my earlier post. I was furious and resigned from the Delaware GOP toot de sweet.

So why should the national GOP, with money ostensibly from Texas, Oklahoma and elsewhere across the fruited plains, give one damn dime toward Joe Blow's election for Governor of Delaware, which is going to happen somewhere down the road, count on it. Or Senator? Or wherever else his ambitions lead him as this is why the defection, figure it out.

So I dunno, I'm not buying that the national GOP should support the local yokels but maybe there's things I haven't thought of. I do think Spector has done peed upon our feet whilst telling us it's raining one too many times, and those two Maine twits really rile, and the base is paying close attention to how this will be handled.

I welcome more thoughts from the forum.

I guess it depends on exactly WHO gets Steele’s ears first, the GOP leadership in the states, or the folks who actually DO THE WORK of getting folks elected. ;o)

Both are solid conservatives, but after seeing Santorum get dumped for Casey I don’t know about another conservative winning there again.

Still pitting the moderate-liberal Republicans against the conservative Republicans. You don't give up, Salena. LOL

So far, Michael Steele has shown he's up to the job and I doubt that is going to change anytime soon.

Don’t underestimate the media here. Steele might not have even said it. The way they are going..they could have made it up out of whole cloth.

If not, I kinda agree with you, although Steele could have been just jovial and light-hearted and not meant anything by it. The reporter put it in there because she/he knew it would be off-putting to some.

Now we just need to end the open primaries to non-registered Republicans.

Amen to that! That is PRECISELY what enabled New Hampshire democrats to resurrect McCain's campaign for 'us'.

Not true. In my district, our conservative republican conservative was beaten by a fake conservative democrat. They had to run a poser in order to beat the republican. If conservatism doesn’t sell then why are there so many democrat pretenders? Even Obama is now trying to sell himself as Reaganesque.

By the way, so far Obama has compared himself to Lincoln, Kennedy, and now Reagan. What do those 3 have in common? Kind of weird he and his handlers keep making these comparisons.

That’s exactly how Casey won. I guess even a few dems are getting tired of Obama already.

Exactly! Remember even Obama ran on “tax cuts for 95% of the Amercian people” and going through the budget “line by line” to make cuts.

Okay, let’s see it. I’m officially open to donating money to the RNC again, as a test program to see if Steele is the real deal.

I saw this on Cavuto.

Cavuto was kind of browbeating Steele about the national party supporting the defectors. I got the impression that Steele was searching for the right thing to say but that he didn’t want to be held down on his comment.

So that “baby” thing came out, a kind of coolish, jive way of stating his open mind but again, he did say he would follow the local party’s wishes.

I guess the local party’s are sensitive about the national party taking over and I can understand why. But like the local GOP here recruiting an open and admitted Democrat, surely there’s somewhere where you draw the line.

I have no problem with Steele's style. And I am hopeful that his substance will consist of energetic, aggressive action.

I wish he could find a spot for Alfonzo Rachel from Macho Sauce. He could get a snowman fired up.

“Now we just need to end the open primaries to non-registered Republicans.”

Agreed. We might not have a socialist president if we had closed our primries.

I just got a call from the RNC. The woman could not even pronounce Steele’s name correctly. I unloaded on her, and cut off her ‘reading’ of her text.
