SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - A woman making national headlines after a tearful moment with President Obama has a new home.
Thursday morning, Chene Thompson handed Henrietta Hughes the keys to her home in Hendry County. Thompson is the wife of State Representative Nick Thompson (R-District 73). Hughes and her son will live at the home rent free.
However, a local organization is coming forward saying Hughes isn't being honest about how much help she's had in the past.
The director of We Care Outreach Ministry, Tanya Johnson, says just last month she offered Henrietta Hughes permanent housing and a place to stay free for three months, but Hughes refused.
"We would have allowed her to stay for the first 90 days, no income. You know free," said Tanya Johnson.
We Care Outreach Ministry is a faith based organization in Fort Myers.
Johnson says she also gave Henrietta and her son Corey, money, food and offered Corey job training courses, but it was refused.
"We have extended a lot of her services to her," Johnson said.
But Henrietta Hughes says these services weren't free and the apartment in East Fort Myers came with a price tag.
Hughes says Tanya Johnson wanted $400 a month immediately.
The disability check Hughes gets is a little more than $800 a month.
Hughes owes money on a loan, has her car insurance payment, a monthly storage bill and says she couldn't afford the rent.
"Where was I going to get $400 a month to give her if I got these expenses," Hughes told WINK News.
WINK News Reporter Nick Spinetto went back to talk to Tanya Johnson and she stands by her story.
Henrietta Hughes says she's never taken advantage of the system and doesn't choose to be homeless. Like other programs she's tried to get help from, she says We Care couldn't meet her needs.
State Representative Nick Thompson and his wife Chene are standing by the Henrietta and her son, Corey. They spoke out against the allegations Henrietta is milking the system, even when confronted with the fact WINK News found out the Hughes' sold property, back in 2005. This is after Henrietta and her son lost thier home in 2003 and started living in their car. Henrietta and her son sold the land for $47,000 dollars. But Chene Thompson says that was all the money they had for several years and it's gone.
You have mail, note there is two because I typed to fast....(chuckle)
Living rent free is imputed income ... she’ll need to pay taxes on that
A Freeper did a “background check” on her. She and her son are from Buffalo, NY where they were interviewed by the local press in 2005 whining that their medical benefits were not sufficient and they actually had to pay in a little bit beyond Medicare.
He’s a computer programmer who has supposedly never been able to find a job, and she’s a woman in her late 50’s described as a “cancer survivor.” Heck, so are a lot of folks, including my mother, who doesn’t expect to get welfare for it.
They obviously float from state to state getting whatever bennies they can, and then decamp when it looks like the fraud authorities are going to catch on to them. Grifters is the word normally used to describe folks like this.
Thank you!
Your welcome. Let me know if we can help.
OK. Her son has a thyroid condition. Now, why doesn’t SHE have a job?
‘A Freeper did a background check on her.’
There are database searches....and then there is a ‘background check’.
There is a huge difference. For just one example, there is no such thing on this planet as a ‘accurate criminal database’. Your local PD doesn’t have one, or access to one. Your State PD - same thing. FBI - same thing. NSA - same thing.
“But Henrietta Hughes says these services weren’t free..”
I want pie! Where’s my pie.
I guess she shouldn’t be buying cars on installment plans if she can’t afford the payment. Order of priorities should be:
1. Shelter
2. Food
3. Utilities
The Freeper just checked the press databases, and lo and behold, there was an article in the Buffalo press about Henrietta and Corey in 2005.
Okay, got it.
Thats not a ‘background check’ as the term is used in my line of work. Thats just a slight upgrade over ‘googling’.
Jim Bowlin saw the Hugheses’ story on the news and offered Corey Hughes a $10-an-hour job at his business, Affinitive Concrete Cutting.
“I’ve always been the type of person to help people who help themselves,” Bowlin said.
Corey Hughes, 37, said he also may be interviewing for a job at the Fort Myers Police Department, and Nick Thompson is inquiring about jobs for Corey Hughes at the state attorney’s office.

Corey Hughes was fired from a job as a program analyst with Fort Myers in March 2002 for poor performance and inadequate job knowledge. He had held the job since April 2000.

Notice how someone offers him a job, but he’s gonna keep looking.

The left will brand any attempt to expose these scam artists as “racism”.
Chene is a lawyer. By the end of this, she'll need one, too.
Well, it turned up a lot of information that a criminal database wouldn’t have found...these people appear never to have been arrested (yet) for fraud, but they’re skating pretty close to the edge.
They’re grifters, and grifters can go for a long time, escaping LE notice but still doing a lot of damage and defrauding both agencies and individuals. Sometimes, of course, they get tired of waiting and then kill some poor little old lady who has been nice to them. But the modern welfare grifter usually just floats from state to state. And probably votes Dem in all of them.
‘Well, it turned up a lot of information that a criminal database wouldnt have found...these people appear never to have been arrested (yet) for fraud, but theyre skating pretty close to the edge.’
I’m looking into it right now. Once you know the identifiers, and the court jurisdictions, its relatively easy, if a bit time consuming - 72 hours or so, before you ‘know’.
Databases are a good starting point, but highly inaccurate, and not even remotely ‘inclusive’. When using a DB you have no idea how it was compiled, when it was updated, how the information contained was verified, or how it was manipulated before, during, or after it was acquired by the provider you select.
The dirty little secret is there is no such thing as an accurate criminal database on this planet. Just pretenders.
She should be arrested or can we just send her to stay with Obama’s mother in law.

This is amazing stuff.
If I read this right, Corey and Henrietta at one time owned three different lots in LeHigh Acres, took out a $125,000 loan to build a house on one, and then skipped out on the loan and walked away from the property (which only two years later sold for $260,000).
And this dead beat woman gets in to see Obama, sits in the front row, and gives her sob story while the MSM laps it up.
Unbelievable.
