GREGG WITHDRAWS NOMINATION FOR COMMERCE SEC
Thu Feb 12 2009 16:18:14 ET
For Immediate Release:
Thursday, February 12, 2009
Senator Gregg Statement on His Withdrawal for Consideration of U.S. Commerce Secretary
Sen. Gregg stated, I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle.
However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.
Obviously the President requires a team that is fully supportive of all his initiatives.
I greatly admire President Obama and know our country will benefit from his leadership, but at this time I must withdraw my name from consideration for this position.
As we move forward, I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the President´s proposals. This will certainly be a goal of mine.
Kathy and I also want to specifically thank Governor Lynch and Bonnie Newman for their friendship and assistance during this period. In addition we wish to thank all the people, especially in New Hampshire, who have been so kind and generous in their supportive comments.
As a further matter of clarification, nothing about the vetting process played any role in this decision. I will continue to represent the people of New Hampshire in the United States Senate.
WHAT ABOUT THE STIMULUS.....Gregg didn’t vote on the matter before?
If he votes no, would that make an impact?
He’s still in the Senate .... woohoo.
What do you think about the stimulus? Gregg recused himself from voting on it before. I wonder if a vote no would have an impact.
Still a senator but saie he will probably not run again.
The old joke:
“What's the difference between the Titanic and [this administration]?
The Titanic had a band.”
I am surprised at Blitzed honesty on this issue. He clearly was not buying into Hillary Rosen’s bullcrap.
She’s livid and a liar. But then.........the dems usually are angry bitter liars.
When will they learn?: NEVER GET IN BED WITH A RAT!!!

Hey, somebody put his honor ahead of his ambitions. What a concept! Look for him in 2010!
No. Specter, Collins, and Snow will make sure of that. The vote will, probably be 61-38 (Gregg adding to the no votes) when it comes up.
He didn't vote on it before, because as Commerce Secy, he would have to implement whatever was passed, and he didn't want to have a hand in having rejected what he would later be called to implement. It's a common, prudent recusal move, nothing to be read into it more than that.
His vote against HR 1 wouldn't change the outcome. The Democrats only need 2 GOP members to "defect" (and then, only by agreeing to move to the vote, they can then vote against the matter if they want to have it both ways) in order to have everything they want.
Don't. He said he's not running in 2010. He's going to retire then.
They need 3 when one of theirs doesn't show up, e.g., Kennedy. It takes 60 votes to limit debate.
Maybe. But really it only is 2 as they’ll get Kennedy out there even if it means having him on a stretcher with paddles ready. They’re not going to roll that easily on this big of a power grab.
Clinton saved his presidency by moving toward the center (tax cuts) in several key areas. Obama sees that as a sign of weakness.
Political double speak.
If you are so against the policies of the stimulus package and Census (as well you should be) that you must withdraw (not to mention the Syria issue) on principle, you cannot say out of the other side of your mouth that this nation will benefit from his leadership.
I am glad Senator that you are withdrawing on principle, but you also can't have it both ways.
Fact is, Obama is a marxist ideolog whose policies will be terrible for this nation...a disaster.
