Drudge Report Announcement

GREGG WITHDRAWS NOMINATION FOR COMMERCE SEC
Thu Feb 12 2009 16:18:14 ET

For Immediate Release:
Thursday, February 12, 2009

Senator Gregg Statement on His Withdrawal for Consideration of U.S. Commerce Secretary

Sen. Gregg stated, “I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle.

“However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.

“Obviously the President requires a team that is fully supportive of all his initiatives.

“I greatly admire President Obama and know our country will benefit from his leadership, but at this time I must withdraw my name from consideration for this position.

“As we move forward, I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the President´s proposals. This will certainly be a goal of mine.

“Kathy and I also want to specifically thank Governor Lynch and Bonnie Newman for their friendship and assistance during this period. In addition we wish to thank all the people, especially in New Hampshire, who have been so kind and generous in their supportive comments.

“As a further matter of clarification, nothing about the vetting process played any role in this decision. I will continue to represent the people of New Hampshire in the United States Senate.”

Gregg has to be careful how he puts this, he does not to give them a chance to blatantly accuse him of deliberately provoking a fight. I know it sucks but Obama has to look not dumb on this, not play victim.

Yep, he should have just withdrawn and shut up - this is pitiful.

But he did at least raise the profile of the census takeover.

According to the Union Leader, Gregg won’t seek re-election in 2010, either.

Maybe he’s sick as well as sick and tired.

It is....

Their desire to kill off (politically) the last conservative on the Eastern Seaboard like they did for over 30 years (converting dems to run as rinos and destroying the GOP in the east) has failed.

In terms of Obama, IMHO fhe momentum is shifting, the wheels are loosing, but they are not quite off the bus...

"Sorry to say, Hannity has always been a wee bit of a “namby pamby. But he is responsible for many people on the fence “seeing the light”."

IMHO, he (along with Laura Ingraham) are partly responsible for the 2006 low turnout and rout due to their incessant whining about the GOP. It got to the point that I am forever lost as a listener to the both of them...

There are an awful lot of Obama voters out there now who have an impression of Obama as being totally clueless. Once that aura of invincibility goes, he’s a dead duck to voters.

I don’t think this guy was a RINO. Based on what I’ve heard he has always been a pretty strong conservative. The worst that can probably be said was that he was a bit naive in believing that 0bama was serious about wanting all different types of ideas.

In any event, he threw a way a chance to be a courtier at Versailles, er, a member of 0bama’s cabinet to working in a minority party. It’s not quite throwing the Ring in Mt. Doom - or whatever it was called - but it is an act of political courage in this day and age.

Not necessarily.

Recall that BJ Clinton got off [snicker, sorry] to a bad start too. IIRC, it took him 3 or 4 tries just to get an Attorney General.

GOP pundit on CNN called Gregg a fiscal conservative.

Dem pundit on CNN called Gregg irresponsible.

I was talking about his radio show. I don’t have cable so don’t see the shout shows much. What I have seen of H & C, I’m with you.
