Barely Bipartisan But a Senate Stimulus Deal is Done

Sat Feb 7

The U.S. Senate looks to be on track to pass a bill that sounds almost exactly like what President Barack Obama asked for last month.

The measure - now heralded as $780 billion, down from $890 billion - will include about 40% in tax cuts and more than 80% of the spending will flood the faltering economy within the next 18 months.

But with just three Republican votes, the bill falls well short of the bipartisan goal Obama worked hard to achieve.

The final cost of the bill remained fuzzy late Friday as senators scrambled to figure out how three amendments the Senate has already passed, estimated to add at least another $30 billion more in spending, would affect the total.

Ten additional pending amendments could also alter the overall number. Democrats estimate the total in the end could range from $780 billion to $820 billion; Republican leaders said they believe the bill would cost more than $827 billion even before other amendments are added.

Nevertheless, the deal has three G.O.P. votes in the Senate in its support - three more than the President got in the House.

I sent Mr. Specter a little note telling him what I thought of his position and that I will not be supporting him in the future. What a traitor.

I am sorry my Senator Specter is one of the three asses, and I will be doing all I can to remove him from office as he doesn't represent conservatives. In fact I quit the party the day after the election. If the Republicans ever start representing conservative American values instead of Democrat views give me a call. This bill is insane.

The vote hasn’t been taken. All claims of this being a done deal are intended to silence opposition.

Hear, hear....dem Psy Op's 101-a

We need to really pour on the pressure.

Rush is going to have a bit of a rallying affect with this on Monday too, just in time

We’ve seen this tactic used again and again. The last amnesty bill was a done deal the day before we killed it.

Three foolish selfish (or in the case of Specter, senile) people compromised the core values of our entire political party and also by helping this bill get passed, damaged perhaps irrevocably the financial stability of the United States

All of them took money not from their constituents, but from the NATIONAL REPUBLICAN PARTY and its grass roots organzations and members - to get re electred

Specter won’t even acknowledge my email because I am not from Pennsylvania. But he will take my money to get elected and he will spend my money on a democrat pork bill.
Wham Bam , no thank you, ma’am

Shame on Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Arlen Specter-

Shame

Any GOP Senator who votes for this nonsense is going to be targeted for removal in the next GOP primary. These RINOs do not know the wrath they are going to incur.

I believe we need these 3 traitors to make our agenda work. Assuming these 3 RINO’s get the bill passed - that means ONLY 3 Republicans went for the package. The pork spending package will fail miserably and that leaves no one else to blame but the dimwits that passed it. Obama will never recover from this and he and the dims will go down in four (if not 2) years. Bring it on. This is the beginning of the end for His Stupidness. The only problem is we will have an additional trillion dollars to recover from when sanity once again reigns.

I have Mel Martinez and he’s leaving but my current Governor Crist is just as bad and he’ll probably get the seat.
Martinez is as bad as Spector just hasn’t been hanging around steeling as long.

"Barely bipartisan"? It is not at all bipartisan. If I understand correctly, out of the combined 219 Republicans in the House and Senate, the bill may get 3 votes. That is less than 2% of all of the Republicans in Congress. "Less than two percent of all Republicans on Capitol Hill voted for this boondoggle" should become a mantra.

Pulled the following out of the comments:

“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

Rumor has it that Collins is still undecided.

This bill isn't done yet, Monday is the day when they vote on it. Also FReepers if your Senators are DemoRats, call their asses anyway.
