Franco's unlikely to drop a Pa. election (Franco Harris to run for Senate?)
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | 2/6/09 | Eric Heyl

Arlen Specter should start sweating.

Specter undoubtedly thought he dodged a (non-magic) bullet recently when Chris Matthews decided against running for Specter's U.S. Senate seat next year. The MSNBC talking head would have been a formidable foe.

But if recent rumblings in political circles prove true, that bullet soon might be replaced by a cannonball headed directly for the five-term incumbent.

People want to persuade Steelers' legendary running back Franco Harris to make a Senate bid. You know Harris. He's the bearded guy who caught the Immaculate Reception.

Don't take my word that Democratic insiders want Harris to run. Take the word of state Democratic Committee Chairman T.J. Rooney, who recently told the Politico Web site just that.

Harris, 58, of Leet, the owner of Super Bakery/RSuper Foods in McCandless, did not return a phone message Thursday regarding his possible interest in the Senate seat.

But the idea of a Harris candidacy made sense even before the Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII Sunday, whipping Western Pennsylvania into an even greater Black-and-Gold frenzy than usual.

True, the last time a Steelers great ran for statewide office, he fumbled the ball. Hall-of-Fame wide receiver Lynn Swann was trounced when he sought to unseat Gov. Ed Rendell in 2006, winning less than 40 percent of the vote.

It didn’t work for Lynn Swann who was a far better player. IMHO!

Let's not get crazy here. Swann's career was almost to short for his receiving stats to add up to a spot in the Hall of Fame. There was a lot of debate about it. He made a lot of highlight reels, but his numbers were borderline -- according to some sportswriters.

Franco, OTOH, retired as one of the leaders in career rushing yards. He had his detractors, like the great Jim Brown, who felt that Franco was 'soft' and ran out of bounds too much.

You are correct. I like Lynn Swann a lot. He comes across as a very reasonable, normal human being. If the election would have been held in February 2006 rather than November 2006, he would have won easily. He was a total political neophyte and let RINO operatives sabatoge his campaign. A lot of these same operatives belly up to the same trough as Ed Rendell and voted for his tax increases in return for goodies for their own district. Most of them were voted out, including the horse's ass Jubelier who helped the RATs sneak through the pay raise.

Our own former representaive (a blue dog style Democrat, since retired) got thrown off all his committee assignments for helping to blow the whistle on this s***.

America will be so fed up by 2010 that no sane person will want to run as a dim... we get hit again and it may not be safe to be a member of that party.

This is the character of Franco Harris:

At the forefront of the modern debate on the emasculation of football, of course, is the Jim Brown-Franco Harris show. Harris, the Steeler running back, was approaching Brown's record for career yards gained. Brown grew angry at comparisons between the two because he claims Harris was simply running out of bounds, to preserve his longevity. Most of the cast of characters in this article agree with Brown. But it wasn't just Franco Harris, whose career ended ignominiously this year.

Yep, the lad is definitely a Dimocrat.

The two (friendship and political support) can and should be separated. I told my lib son if he ever ran for office I wouldn’t give a dime or vote for him!

If my son were a lib {he's not he's a Navy Captain} my daughter's share of the my will would double.

A lib is too stupid and dangerous to be entrusted with money.

"He’s a former celebrity and therefore is entitled. It’s all the rage."

The 17th Amendment made senate races little more than popularity contests.

Well, my ‘lib’ is a disenchanted former conservative who gave up on the GOP ... he’d have lots of company on this site. He’s only 24 and hopefully will come around. Better yet, the GOP will come around.

Doubt if he'd get Joe Pa's endorsement.

Doubt if he'd get Lynn Swann's endorsement.

OK, he'll get Terry Bradshaw's.
