Franco's unlikely to drop a Pa. election (Franco Harris to run for Senate?)
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | 2/6/09 | Eric Heyl

Arlen Specter should start sweating.

Specter undoubtedly thought he dodged a (non-magic) bullet recently when Chris Matthews decided against running for Specter's U.S. Senate seat next year. The MSNBC talking head would have been a formidable foe.

But if recent rumblings in political circles prove true, that bullet soon might be replaced by a cannonball headed directly for the five-term incumbent.

People want to persuade Steelers' legendary running back Franco Harris to make a Senate bid. You know Harris. He's the bearded guy who caught the Immaculate Reception.

Don't take my word that Democratic insiders want Harris to run. Take the word of state Democratic Committee Chairman T.J. Rooney, who recently told the Politico Web site just that.

Harris, 58, of Leet, the owner of Super Bakery/RSuper Foods in McCandless, did not return a phone message Thursday regarding his possible interest in the Senate seat.

But the idea of a Harris candidacy made sense even before the Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII Sunday, whipping Western Pennsylvania into an even greater Black-and-Gold frenzy than usual.

True, the last time a Steelers great ran for statewide office, he fumbled the ball. Hall-of-Fame wide receiver Lynn Swann was trounced when he sought to unseat Gov. Ed Rendell in 2006, winning less than 40 percent of the vote.

What would be the difference between a Democrat Harris and Scottish Law Specter anyway? Not much that I can see.

He’s a former celebrity and therefore is entitled. It’s all the rage.

He refused to support his friend Lynn Swan.

Being a liberal is more important than friendship!

It didn’t work for Lynn Swann who was a far better player. IMHO!

Harris just launched a line of furniture called The Immaculate Collection. I kid you not. That sooo makes him qualified to serve in the U.S. Senate!

If Lynn Swann couldn’t win for Governor, Harris won’t win for Senator...oh wait. Swann ran as a Republican, and Pennsylvania doesn’t elect no stinkin’ Republicans.

As a Steelers fan and a conservative, this guy disgusts me. Would it be considered a threat to homeland security if I tackled his statue at Pittsburgh Airport?

WTF is with the dumba$$ celebrity parade to the Senate??!?

I’ll vote for anybody who runs against a RINO.

Great, the only thing we have to put up against RINO's and dems are football players.

In all fairness to Lynn Swann, the GOP here in PA is totally disorganized at the state level. With support and political, it would have been Gov. Swann...The R’s here are laughable.

Harris in now an official ‘FOO’ (Friend of Obama...can I coin that?) Noobie Sen. Harris (imo) does less damage than Senior Senator (rino) Specter.

Swann’s campaign was the most poorly run in the history of modern politics. Yes it was worse than McCain’s. Swann did absolutely nothing. Hi I am Lynn Swann, I have 4 Super Bowl rings, vote for me.

Sure looks that way, when a joke like Al Franken even had a serious chance to run, much less possibly unseat a real Congressman. Maybe Paris Hilton will decide in a moment of boredom to run. I bet she’d get elected too. You don’t need to have a commitment to public service anymore, just a lot of money and name recognition. You don’t even have to know the Constitution (heck, look at who’s President).

Excellent point; fits in perfectly with my current anti-incumbent voting plan.

Franco Harris is cut from the same lefty cloth as Dan Rooney.
