PITTSBURGH STEELERS VS. ARIZONA CARDINALS
6:00PM ET - NBC
PennMom, you are probably right in your analysis, but from an outsiders standpoint, when you have the guy who has the affirmative action rule in the league named after him, I can understand how people would think that.
I dont think its intellectually fair to expect that if an owner publicly pushes affirmative action, then hires a minority, that people wont assume that he was just following his ideology, or that it at least played a part in the hire.
The person that this is ultimately kind of sad for is Mike Tomlin, who turns out to be an excellent coach, and in hindsight, the best man for the job.
But, since we know the owner in question wants there to be more black coaches, no one can honestly say that they know whether or not race was a factor in his hiring, and I think its fair to ask the question rhetorically. If we didnt have such a stupid rule in place, then this wouldn’t even be a question...we would just assume the Rooney’s hired Tomlin on his merits.
In the city. The streets were full and some kids decided to light a couch on fire. Brilliant.
Consider this: the Rooneys named Kordell Stewart— who is black —to be the quarterback of the team on the first day the national NAACP convention was in Pittsburgh. I forget the year, maybe 1998. That turned out not to be as good a decision as Tomlin. I was very turned off when Mr. Rooney thanked Barack Obama tonight — for what? But I love my Steelers.
Yeah, he looks very feeble.
My brother said he was rubbing his six-week old newborn “for luck” during the game. Holding the baby also stopped him from yelling.
Considering the outcome of the game, and the season the Steelers have had I’m sure you can conclude that Mike Tomlin was the man for the job. You don’t put a big business franchise in the hands of some sort of affirmative action pick. Mike actually knows what he’s doing. Don’t degrade his skill.
Congrats and we know the rest of the Rooney clan isn’t happy with Dan’s love of that one.
Great finish to a game that didn’t offer much, till the last 10 minutes.
And mad props to Santonio on a awesone catch to win. And Buckeye nation is happy that he won the MVP award.
Shite. I don’t like how this one ended. Some Cardinal defender tripped?
Pretty good game though.
Not surprising, when you play the best pass-rushing defense in the NFL, there is more of a need to hold. Fans citing the final tallies of penalties like they should be even every game remind me of liberals citing the racial disparities of convicted criminals as evidence of racism.
I heard Michaels say it. But the booth must have taken all of 10 seconds to look at it - not enough time. It seems clearly to be a forward pass. Did the booth simply decide the game was over?
The Cardinals got the short end of the stick. Especially on that roughing the passer call early on.
I don't know where you are getting your history, but it is wrong. Go here for the official team history.
How dare anyone criticize Ben for riding his motorcycle without a helmet. That guy must have really hated Ben for not wanting him to die in a crash. right???
And every sports commentator has said that the Steelers told Whiz he was not going to get the head coaching job BEFORE they announced. I suppose it was a courtesy.
The Rooney rule was created by Rooney.
This is my reality, you are entitled to yours. But you are right, how dare Whiz want Ben to use some common sense.
Okay, conversation over, we are not going to agree.
A lot more criticizing would go a long way to saving the life of some of these pampered athletes who rish life and limb seemingly without a care. No one has the guts to care enough about their wellbeing. It has to always be only about how well they play on any given Sunday....
No. There was a point when Art Rooney was going broke and thought he would have to drop the franchise. His friend, Bert Bell, owner of the Eagles and later NFL Comissioner, bought some of the team just to keep it going. During WWII when neither the Steelers or the Eagles could get enough players to field a team, they fielded a joint squad for one season and called themselves The Steagles. The next year, the Steelers and Cards did the same thing and called themselves The Pitt-Cards.
But it has been one franchise with Art Rooney as the majority owner since 1933 that was first called The Pirates and then The Steelers. Here's another history.
I had no stake in either team, but was hoping for anything other than a blowout. And this one will go down in the books.....spectacular plays, come from behinds, stupid highschool level penalties, the works!
Now...this was actually a football game....and American Championship.
So why is all the MSM reporting about the commercials and the half time show?
Personally, I tuned away from most of the commercials and all of the half time to watch a CSI marathon on another channel. I did stay tuned for the entire game.
Let's get this back to a football game, shall we?
I do not think it was a well-officiated game at all, but the Cards made too many mistakes throughout the game to blame the refs for the outcome.
“It was an Instant Classic!”
Happy for the Pittsburgh fans and feeling sorry for the Cardinals and their fans.
If anyone showed their greatness in defeat Kurt Warner and the Cards did.
They were so close but the Steelers were clearly destined to make it to the top.
“If not one single person on your offense is unable to rundown a defensive lineman in the 100 Yard Dash, you do not deserve to win the game.”
It wasn’t about running him down, as he got huge blocks along the way.
Shoot Kurt Warner himself got run over with about three other Cardinals.
It was an insane play and ironically cost the Cards big. If he gets called down at the 1, well.....
If I was a Cardinals fan, it would be hard to watch this one again. For the Steeler fans I would imagine it will be viewed until the spring flowers come out.
Taped it and had hoped for a good game. We got a great game.
“Yep. Too bad you see the color of his skin and not the content of his character.
Maybe some day...”
Agreed. You don’t go to the Super Bowl in the NFL without earning it.
Congrats to the Steelers.
