Transportation officials in Texas are scrambling to prevent hackers from changing messages on digital road signs after one sign in Austin was altered to read, "Zombies Ahead."
Chris Lippincott, director of media relations for the Texas Department of Transportation, confirmed that a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th Street, near the University of Texas at Austin, was hacked into during the early hours of Jan. 19.
"It was clever, kind of cute, but not what it was intended for," said Lippincott, who saw the sign during his morning commute. "Those signs are deployed for a reason to improve traffic conditions, let folks know there's a road closure."
"It's sort of amusing, but not at all helpful," he told FOXNews.com.

I gave the book to a friend this year for Christmas. He said he really needed one when he opened it.
Of course there are some pretty funny passages in the book also.
The guy’s got a great sense of humor and really did like the book.
On January 19th, all day they said, "WARNING! Expect heavy traffic around Washington DC for the inauguration."
Now really.
We're in Greensboro, NC and they're telling us to be careful around Washington?
I think it was rubbing our noses in it.
he makes a ton of money off folks paying to get their pictures taken with him.

In Houston, the signs seem to be deployed solely to tell us about missing elderly persons from other towns.
Several in Miami now say “Stop running red lights.”
There is a huge problem of people running red lights in this town.
BTW, Max Brooks is Mel’s son.
And that book is a GREAT read.
Groovy. “It’s good to be the King...”
Wouldn’t it be major fun to do this?
Or those used to inflict guilt:
“Slow Down. My Daddy Works Here.”
Well if nobody pursued me for being here illegally I would go ahead and assume I could break the other laws as well.
Driving in Miami is like driving in a 3rd world capital.
Not only are red lights ignored, but jaywalkers abound.
And amongst the group that voted 99% for Obama, they jaywalk like there’s no tomorrow. They literally walk right out in front of you, and yes, they do see you coming, but they do not care.
What’s a broken leg if it means $100,000 from an insurance company?
Guess the Aggies are pulling a Caltech/MIT style prank on the Tea Sippers. ;)
Actually, 15th Street is where you turn from Lamar to get to all the State Government buildings, so this sign might not be too far off...
thanks for posting this. the sign happens to be outside my office window. it was the funniest thing i had ever seen.
...women and minorities suffer!
TDOT would know exactly who was responsible for that.
It wern’t Gunner...he’d just blow it up!
