Indiscriminate kidnappings. Nearly daily beheadings. Gangs that mock and kill government agents.
This isn't Iraq or Pakistan. It's Mexico, which the U.S. government and a growing number of experts say is becoming one of the world's biggest security risks.
The prospect that America's southern neighbor could melt into lawlessness provides an unexpected challenge to President Obama's government. In its latest report anticipating possible global security risks, the U.S. Joint Forces Command lumps Mexico and Pakistan together as being at risk of a "rapid and sudden collapse."
"The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and pressure by criminal gangs and drug cartels," the command said in the report, published Nov. 25.
Retiring CIA chief Michael V. Hayden told reporters Friday that Mexico could rank alongside Iran as a challenge for Mr. Obama - perhaps a greater problem than Iraq.
The Justice Department said last month that Mexican gangs are the "biggest organized crime threat to the United States." Outgoing National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley said last week that the worsening violence threatens Mexico's democratic form of government.
The alarm is spreading to the private sector as well. Mexico - Latin America's second-biggest economy and the United States' third-biggest oil supplier - is one of the top 10 global risks for 2009 identified by the Eurasia Group, a New York-based consulting firm.

One thing that I can’t understand is that this U.S. Joint Forces Command report was released in November 2008 — if this situation is so critical, then why did the press wait TWO MONTHS, to start writing about it?
I offered two solutions both were the extremes and they both work. What we are doing now is not working and will not work. I also asked for your answer to the problem. What is it?
Personally my preference would be execution of the smugglers and sellers with no exceptions. This worked in Singapore that at one time had a terrible problem with drugs. However, the legal profession and the politicians would not allow this to happen here.
I eagerly await your solution.
“I know nothing I can post will convince you otherwise, but Mexico has 32 states. 5 or 6 of which are extreme problems”
One of my companies owner’s family have been threatened with kidnapping several times in Saltillo(the middle of no where).
Good find, Kimberly. Good post.
So far in my life’s travels I have met two people kidnapped in Mexico and held for ransom. I’ve spoken with both of them at length. The latest is my mercedes salesman. He is a mexican jew, owned a jewelry store in MC and lost everything he owned including his house. His wife sold everything to the tune of $6mil to get him back. Now he sells cars in San Antonio.
Not unexpected at all. Anyone who's been watching what's been going on there should have seen if coming for ages.
That's just going to be an excuse for him not dealing with it properly.
Mike seems to be a little short sighted in his article by only mentioning President Bush. I distinctly remember some senators speaking at a rally in NY wanting amnesty for all the illegals. The House and Senate made no effort to close the borders as well. The reason for the lack of response?
It is called... V O T E S.
All would rather sale the country down the hole for their power.
“One has to wonder what the Mexican druggies have on the Ex President Bush (and the House and the Senate ) which prevented him from controlling our southern border between the US and Mexico.”
THERE Fixed it! ;)
If they simply did that in US cities, we’d see an improvement.
The deportation needs to start now.
Sure, they’ll try to sneak back, but it’ll take time and for a bit, things will be better.
Annex Mexico.
Have the Army go in and restore order, and then institute a territorial government.
Here we go again——manipulated by the greedy pukeneos.
Shoulda known when the pukes foisted amnesty on the US.......pukes are getting ready for another Big Payoff.
Pukneo Richard Perle’s starting up a Mideast oil business with his cut of trillion dollar war profiteering. Looks like he has his cunning puke eyes set on Mexican oil.
Seems like only yesterday (sarc) when the pukes mfg documents to dupe Bush into transferring trillions of US dollars into Mideast hellholes. Now it’s the failed state of Mexico.
Just what we need......Mideast dumbos......Mexican nitwits......too stupid to govern their own countries.
HERE’S A SCARY THOUGHT: Obama is not as dangerous as that little twerp Rahm Emanuel, his COS......don’t trust this guy AT ALL. Be very afraid that that this puke (dressed up like a Dim) is running around the WH.
Rather than collapse the sovereignty of The United States of America in a NAU, that is one solution that has merit, BuffaloJack; Other possible solutions BUMP; BUMP!
Thanks for the ping, AuntB. Very interesting.
"Many said the solution lies in getting the United States to give more help and let in more migrant workers who otherwise might turn to the drug trade to make a living."
That is the dumbest solution to Mexico's drug wars I've seen yet.
I thought they had rebel problems in Chiapas.
Sure, annex Mexico and give Obama and Democrats the opportunity to re-write our constitution with regard to our new territory....as it will be a new nation with greater responsibilities and more gov't safeguards.
IMO that's not a thought its a fact. His ethnicity aside, Rahm is a Nazi and would look great in a an S.S. uniform. He's prolly already drawing up plans for camps with gas chambers and ovens for 'the undesirables' (conservatives).
And if anyone wants to start a Nuke War with Iran, its HIM.
But....but......Obaba promised us a PERFECT world......and who better than Rahm to orchestrate it (sob).
With Cowboy Bill down the tubes up to his chaps in corruption, and Geithner flling out official forms to get IMF reimbursements for taxes Geithner says he "forgot" to pay..........I say Thank God Obaba appointed to his admin somebody like Rahm Emanuel, who is the epitome of perfection AND who paid ALL his taxes (sniffle).
"Mr Perfect" Rahm had an amazing career path while he was paying his taxes---a straight-to-the-top trajectory. Rahm did it all by hisself .....AND he paid all his taxes (bawl).
RAHM'S EFFORTLESS RISE TO THE TOP WHILE PAYING HIS TAXES
"Mr Perfect" resigned his position as an advisor to Bill Clinton, in 1998 to become a Wall Street investment banker with Wasserstein Perella, (now Dresdner Kleinwort), where he worked until 2002. In 1999, "Mr Perfect" became managing director at their Chicago office. According to Congressional disclosures, Emanuel made $16.2 million in his 2 1/2 year stint as a banker AND he paid all his taxes.
Amazingly, "Mr Perfect" became a multi-millioniare overnight----and he wasn't even voted "Most Likely To Succeed" (sniffle). And he paid all his taxes.
At Wasserstein Perella, where he paid all his taxes, Perfect Rahm worked on eight deals, including the acquisition by Commonwealth Edison of Peco Energy and the purchase by GTCR Golder Rauner of the SecurityLink home security unit from SBC.
Rahm then ran for Congress; luckily members of the securities and investment industry became his biggest backers, donating more than $1.5M to his campaigns dating back to 2002, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Mr Perfect also leaned heavily upon the industry as 2006 Dem Congressional Campaign Committee Chair. Financial industry donors contributed more than $5.8M to the Dem committee, behind only retirees.
Pres Bill Clinton in 2000 named Mr Perfect to the Board of Directors for the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation ("Freddie Mac"). Rahm's position paid him $31,060 in 2000 and $231,655 in 2001 and paid all his taxes. During the time Emanuel spent on the board, Freddie Mac was plagued with scandals involving campaign contributions and accounting irregularities. The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) later accused the board of having "failed in its duty to follow up on matters brought to its attention." Emanuel resigned from the board in 2001 when he ran for Congress. In between Rahm's career choices, he won a coveted scholarship to the prestigious Joffrey School of Ballet; he was THAT good in a tutu.
How in God's name can we argue with such perfection? (sob)
“
Nicely jaded reply from someone who has spent NO time living in Mexico that I know of, and makes it her lifes work to point out every possible disaster-in-waiting related to it. Move to Montana if you hate Mexico so much.”
Montana is a fine place. No, I’ve never lived in Mexico...been there several times....why would I want to live there....their own citizens don’t want to live there!
You remind me of the second generation Mexican-American who Carlos Mencia tried his best to say..”Mexico sucks”
C’mon, you can do it, xcamel....repeat after me....
Mexico SUCKS!
Isn't it amazing that nearly every single former Spanish colony is a sh!thole, while nearly every single former British colony is prosperous and free. I still haven't figured out why that is.
“That is the dumbest solution to Mexico’s drug wars I’ve seen yet.”
Reminds me of the young man who came up to me in a store parking lot, asking for money, otherwise ,he would have to steal something and he didn’t want to do that.
