Michelle goes for gold
The Telegraph ^ | 1/20/2009 | Hilary Alexander

Once again, Michelle Obama confounded the fashion critics with her surprise choice for Inauguration Day.

In spite of pundits speculating she would steer clear of anything which suggested 'bling' in a time of worldwide economic crisis, the new First Lady went for gold.

She chose a scintillating, pale-gold embossed coat with a matching shift dress which featured a sparkling geometric, diamanté neckline, and cardigan, by one of her favourite designers, Isabel Toledo.

She accessorised the ensemble with leather gloves and a pair of British luxury brand, Jimmy Choo shoes, the 'Glacier' patent leather pumps in a striking shade of green.

The couple's two daughters wore coats from the J. Crew children's collection 'Crewcuts', Malia in periwinkle blue, and Sasha in strawberry-pink, both accessorised with warm scarves.

Mrs Obama's choice of outfit underscored her reputation as a fashion individual with a strong sense of personal style.

Since the beginning of Barack Obama's race to be the first black American president, his wife, who has been dubbed 'Mo', has surprised and delighted with her wardrobe. Her choice of the Cuban-American, Isabel Toledo, who runs her company with husband Ruben, is in line with her constant support of a younger generation of designers from the more eclectic end of the style spectrum.

At the weekend, when as First Lady Elect she accompanied her husband on his historic whistle stop tour from Philadelphia to Washington DC, she favoured a custom-designed suit from the Zero+Maria Cornejo collection, designed by Maria Cornejo. Cornejo, who was born in Cuba, raised in England and lists Tilda Swinton, Sofia Coppola and Cindy Sherman among her fans.

The Maria Cornejo choice also contained a strong British fashion link, for Cornejo studied at Ravensbourne College in Kent, and was one of the rising young

My theory is Obama and Michelle are believing all the stuff the MSM are saying about them. Obama thought he could compose his own speech and Michelle thought she could dress herself. I expect they will be seeking the advice of speechwriters and stylists shortly....

BTW, I guarantee you the so-called 'fashion experts' are not going to criticize Michelle's wardrobe no matter how ugly it is. In fact, they are already writing glowing reviews of that ugly yellow/green thing w/her green J Crew gloves.

They only criticize Republicans/Conservatives like Sarah Palin who out classes all of them.

Just like everything in their miserable little lives it's all about politics and not good taste.

I was surprised at the color, the fabric and the bling for daytime. There are colors that flatter black women and that is not one of them. Red, black, chartreuse, bright yellow, garnet, royal blue, hot pink are all colors that flatter black women. They are also colors that photograph and video well.

Simple, solid color fabrics in matte or satin photograph the best and are the most slimming to their wearers. Prints or heavily textured or blingy fabrics do not photograph or video well and make wearers look heavy. They might be lovely in person, but not on film.

Also surprised at the evening gown. It looks very juvenile - like something a girl would wear to an 8th grade dance.

Yes, it does look a lot like a chenille bedspread.

I am seldom care what some celebrity wears. However, Mrs. Obama has shown the world that, like Britney Spears, she knows what authentic American tackiness is truly all about.

You mean the ball gown? Oy. Looks like it’s covered in skin tags.

That’s my grandmother’s brocade sofa cushions, and the green Naugahyde recliner next to the sofa. We sold them at the estate sale in 1998. Way to reduce, reuse, and recycle, Michelle!

If that dress had been a solid color it would have looked very nice.

and the green Naugahyde recliner

Yes! Thank you! I was racking my brain trying to remember where I'd last seen that color. My parents reupholstered their sectional couch with a textured naugahyde that was precisely that sick shade of green.

We hillbillies have a specific name for that particular shade; “calf sh*t green”.

Any rural folks here will instantly recognize the accuracy of that description.
