Once again, Michelle Obama confounded the fashion critics with her surprise choice for Inauguration Day.
In spite of pundits speculating she would steer clear of anything which suggested 'bling' in a time of worldwide economic crisis, the new First Lady went for gold.
She chose a scintillating, pale-gold embossed coat with a matching shift dress which featured a sparkling geometric, diamanté neckline, and cardigan, by one of her favourite designers, Isabel Toledo.
She accessorised the ensemble with leather gloves and a pair of British luxury brand, Jimmy Choo shoes, the 'Glacier' patent leather pumps in a striking shade of green.
The couple's two daughters wore coats from the J. Crew children's collection 'Crewcuts', Malia in periwinkle blue, and Sasha in strawberry-pink, both accessorised with warm scarves.
Mrs Obama's choice of outfit underscored her reputation as a fashion individual with a strong sense of personal style.
Since the beginning of Barack Obama's race to be the first black American president, his wife, who has been dubbed 'Mo', has surprised and delighted with her wardrobe. Her choice of the Cuban-American, Isabel Toledo, who runs her company with husband Ruben, is in line with her constant support of a younger generation of designers from the more eclectic end of the style spectrum.
At the weekend, when as First Lady Elect she accompanied her husband on his historic whistle stop tour from Philadelphia to Washington DC, she favoured a custom-designed suit from the Zero+Maria Cornejo collection, designed by Maria Cornejo. Cornejo, who was born in Cuba, raised in England and lists Tilda Swinton, Sofia Coppola and Cindy Sherman among her fans.

Don't let the collectivists kid you. It was not "yellow".
Honestly, it looks like an ugly dress to me.
I thought it was stinkillating.
Cornholio?
I accidentally caught a glimpse on the tv at someone else’s house tonight (my tv is officially off limites for awhile) and she looked like she was wearing nice warm winter jammies with a matching housecoat. With green hands.
why should it surprise anyone? the most expensive inauguration in history? in bad economic times? like typical “elitists”, the rules aren’t for them, they are for us.
What an ugly color? No one should ever wear that!
Let’s not think Michelle Obama is the least bit concerned with our economic problems. You can be sure she has long since forgotten her blue collar roots back in Chicago.
Bling is in the the next four years. Some designer right now is making a diamond studded grill for those teeth.
Did she get it at Gap for $16.00?
The WORST ensemble ever worn on Pennsylvania Ave. And whoever told her to wear a gaudy diamond choker with a glittering dress in the daytime? I thought there were fashion advisers who were working with her on her outfit. Obviously, not.
Not just any green, but diarrhea green.
Sorry. Couldn’t resist.
I’m trying to be charitable here but it seems this woman wears one atrocious outfit after another.
Chat.
Hideous. Just like her.
It’s going to be a dreadful four years.
‘Mo’ affectionate shorthand fo Moose
I am Cornholio. I studied at Ravensbourne College in Kent.
If you think this is bad you should see her ‘ball gown’ that she is wearing right now.
WRONG color, WRONG material for this time of year and time of day. Gold brocade would be a choice for an evening occasion
