Great. More welfare for the automakers. Is this a great country, or what?

Hmmmm ... could this lead to a bounty on useless old hags congress vermin who are running the country into the ground?

What would I be able to get on, say EBay, for the ears of one of these mentioned?

Any bidders out here?

Dang!

They’ve got to be in driveable condition!

Somehow I just knew I would not be able to get away with the plan that was forming in my head...

It seems the devil is in the details. I’ll bet that any vehicle class other than Prius-wannabees are struggling just to meet the CAFE standard for that class. So I want to trade in my 3/4 ton that gets 12 mpg for a newer 3/4 ton. Theones I have looked at all rate around 13 mpg. So to qualify I would have to get one that does 16 or 17 mpg? Maybe if I traded down to a 4 cylinder.

I'll don my tin foil hat and say this more to do with tracking you via chips and satellite than it has to do with the environment. This is like telling us that red light cameras are for public safety.

“While participation in the voluntary program is hard to gauge”

It’s not hard for me to gauge. It is NOT financially feasible for me to purchase a new vehicle given the present economy and the overwhelming corruption and stupidity of Congress.

I’ll keep the “clunker.”

(So what will Congress do then? Force the banks to lend money to all of us who cannot afford a new vehicle? [sarc])

None of the people who want everyone to drive hybrids/hydrogen/electric/alternative cars have answered a simple question:

If every vehicle on the road today were to get replaced with "environmentally-friendly" vehicles -- what, exactly, will be done with the 250 million "old" vehicles currently on the road? They have to be put somewhere or disposed of; the cars contain fuels and other fluids that they don't want released into the environment; each one takes up a lot of physical space; re-selling to the third world simply shifts the problem elsewhere; etc.

no one could ever convince me to let go of my ‘70 F100, completely overhauled for $2,500 (i did the work)...will pull another truck across country no problem...to go $35,000 in debt for a new truck thet gets about 4 more mpg...351 windsor, flat tops, rv cam, offenhauser dual port manifold, eldebrock-jetted slightly lean on the primaries, msd ignition and a ZF 5 speed from a ‘92 F250. I’ve gone Cuba and am staying that way...been in debt before and never plan to live under that sword again.

I am the original owner of a 1987 F-150 4WD longbed V8. The truck has just over 100K ORIGINAL miles on it, and has never given me an ounce of trouble, and most important of all it has long since been PAID OFF.

Now the government want's me to turn it in so they can give me a $4500 voucher toward the purchase of a newer truck from a company that may not exist at the end of this year? In today's economy?

F'n morons.

My old clunker apparently doesn’t qualify:

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/calculatorSelectEngine.jsp?year=1987&make=Lincoln&model=Town%20Car

Unless the CAFE figures are significantly lower. When new it had a combined EPA of 21 MPG. Today, I doubt it’s getting 10 MPG, and it just isn’t worth the cost of repairing it to get better fuel mileage.

Anybody have a link to the ‘when new’ CAFE MPG for my 1987 Lincoln Town Car? I did a little googling, but came up enpty.

Woo hoo!!

MORE tax dollars to throw away on junk policy!!

If you wonder why your taxes are so high (and about to go a lot higher!), junk programs like these are the reason. If this is the most important thing that the Congress has on its agenda, adjourn them now and save the taxpayers several boatloads of money. Send the politicians home until there is an actual issue that, under the Constitution, they are able to address!!

Bill numbers: S247 & HR520

Both were introduced on 1/14/09 and in both cases the text has not been posted by GPO yet.

Wasn’t this already in place some 15 years ago? I recall a picture and article of an old man that was standing on the hood of his crushed (just moments before low mileage pristine) 1971 Ranchero holding a check in his hand for $50.00 or some rediculous amount.

They are slowly tightening the vise on us. Lookout for continually decreasing options for owning cars, guns, lawnmowers, wood stoves, fireplaces, etc.

They have just stunned us with the near destruction and takeover of our economy with hardly a peep out of the people. Taking away these other things should be a piece of cake.
