In my exclusive interview with Barack Obama airing tomorrow on This Week, the president-elect told me that fixing our economy over the long term will require sacrifice from every American and scaling back some of his campaign promises.
"Our challenge is going to be identifying what works and putting more money into that, eliminating things that dont work, and making things that we have more efficient. But Im not suggesting, George, I want to be realistic here, not everything that we talked about during the campaign are we going to be able to do on the pace we had hoped," Obama told me in his first interview since arriving back in Washington, DC as president-elect.
I asked the president-elect, "At the end of the day, are you really talking about over the course of your presidency some kind of grand bargain? That you have tax reform, healthcare reform, entitlement reform including Social Security and Medicare, where everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something, accept change for the greater good?"
"Yes," Obama said.
"And when will that get done?" I asked.
"Well, right now, Im focused on a pretty heavy lift, which is making sure we get that reinvestment and recovery package in place. But what you described is exactly what were going to have to do. What we have to do is to take a look at our structural deficit, how are we paying for government? What are we getting for it? And how do we make the system more efficient?"
"And eventually sacrifice from everyone?" I asked.
"Everybodys going to have to give. Everybodys going to have to have some skin in the game," Obama said.

Gonna have to come and get it, sucker.
So what happened to only tax increases on the "rich"? I guess we're all rich now....
“Its time to be patriotic and pay more taxes. Also we cant drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times.”
Not for him or anyone else!!
Just eliminate 90% of the government programs and everyone that draws a paycheck from them!
Absolutely no stimulus or bail outs!!
After about 2 years if the government stays out of it and everyone living on credit is washed out of the system including the people that made the loans things will retutn to a sensible level.
“Obama” is Kenyan for “Liar. Liar. Turban’s on Fire.”
How much are folks who don’t pay taxes already gonna pony up Bwana?
And, if he's going to increase the pain how will it be remotely possible for things to get better?
I think he's playing with fire here.
Just a right hand or a forehead is all.
Okay, so what's the number of his name, "Zero", or The "One"?
Tell me his real name and we can start computing it...
Looks like we’ve gone from “New Deal” to “Grand Bargain.”
what? Are you in a parallel universe?
What inflation adjustments? We are in a period of DEFLATION mr smartypants. That means all social security payments will be adjusted DOWN, unless they chop the adjustments.
Ah,the old “Sacrifice of the individual to the Collective”.
Where have I heard that before?
If everyone of us did that, the ponzi scheme would collapse like a house of cards in a hurricane.
it will probably take Jesus coming back, but when the income tax is stopped we will have a lot of sanity back in our country.
We already give.
Guess we should just slit our wrists and give blood.
Bout all we will have left soon.
“Everybodys going to have to give. Everybodys going to have to have some skin in the game”
How about, “Everyone’s going to have to save,” or, “Everyone’s going to have to produce”? Why does the money have to pass through the central government’s hands for recovery to come?
“There goes the tax cuts for 95% of the people.”
Actually, when he says “everyone” he probably meant some small portion of taxpayers, or what I like to call the really productive people. You know, rich enough to make it worth the government’s while, yet small enough in total number not to matter come election time.
That cartoon says it all, he is all hat (all talk) and no cattle.
