Robyn Paul, her husband and their three children look like the classic American family -- until you find out that Tiernan, their kindergartner, is still breast-feeding.
Many people are shocked by the idea of nursing a child who is nearly 6 years old, but Paul remains determined to do what she says is best for her child.
"In this culture, breasts are viewed as sexual," Paul said. "We use breasts to sell everything from beer to motorcycles, then a toddler is in mom's arms nursing for what they're supposed to be used for and everybody freaks out."
...
Paul said she usually breast-feeds Tiernan at home when he needs comforting.
"They're running around and playing," she said. "Once they get beyond 3 years old they're not nursing but a couple of times a day."
Although some might consider a pacifier a more socially acceptable way to comfort their child, Paul said she would prefer that her child receive comfort at her breast.
When Tiernan needs comforting, he will ask his mother for "nummies," his word for breast-feeding, Paul said. "We've had conversations about what it tastes like and he says it's very sweet," like vanilla ice cream, Paul said.
She is happy with the choice she made, she said, but she would never force it on somebody else.
"All I'm trying to do is let people know that it does happen, that it is perfectly normal," she said.

Normal at SIX !!! I think NOT !!!
Six years old is way past infancy.
uh, no.
I nursed my babies. My daughter is nursing her baby. But when they can ask for “nummies” and lift your shirt, it’s way, way past time to stop. This isn’t for the child....it’s for the mom.
At six, he should be able to get a cup and carefully pour his own milk.

A RELIGIOUS ruling by an Islamic scholar permitting women to breastfeed adults with whom they work has led to his suspension this month from al-Azhar University in Cairo, the world's leading Sunni university.

Pretty sick, that.
You’re right. Anyone who allows the ChiComs to obtain US missile-guidance technology should be the subject of continual condemnation.
I’ve had five children and nursed for long periods of time, the longest to almost age 4. 6 does seem long but if it works for her family, so what? Breast milk is nutritious and has many health benefits. It’s cows’ milk that is unnatural, except for calves.
Tiernan is going to be one messed up dude....
When I was a young mother, with my first child, a woman that I knew was the president of the local la leche league. We used to go to the beach with several other young mothers and their children. This woman’s youngest child used to run up to her whenever the other children were having snacks and pull down her bathing suit and start sucking away. This kid was playing the surf the rest of the time.
Can’t wait until the boy is pitching high-school baseball and needs a little ‘comfort’ when the bases are loaded. Come on mom ... six is a little old.
Saves money on milk I guess. lol
They HAVE to stop sometime. If they are still doing this when the kid is 13, this will get interesting.
Uh, who is this person and why does she deserve this sort of attention?
Before a kid is six years old, he’s usually bringing friends home to share his afternoon snack with. That could be awkward.
Milk moustache ping.
I find 6 years a little long to be nursing a child but I nursed my son for 3 years and I’m sure many here would say that was way too long.
In a related pet peeve, most people these days begin toilet training WAY too late. A kid should be able to hit the pot most of the time at the age of eighteen months.
