Did McCain Botch the Sarah Palin Pick?
US News & World Report - Washington Whispers ^ | 2008-12-23 | Paul Bedard

The Sarah Palin backlash—or comeback—is underway. Misused by the McCain campaign, then dissed by anonymous McCainiacs as a haughty diva, those who think the senator and his staff are to blame are starting to speak out. And we're not talking about those who traveled with the Alaska governor who quickly took a shining to her and chafed when the McCain team botched her coming out on the campaign trail. Now I'm hearing from key Republicans on Capitol Hill and GOP pollsters who believe that the McCain campaign should have put her out to talk about energy and political independence—her two best issues—instead of making her the conservative attack dog.

Palin could have won that election if she didn’t have that old albatross tied to her neck.

Everyone of those points are great! I hope that you can help shape her strategy in 2012 if she decides to run!

Yes it was really dumb of Sarah Palin to say the fundamentals of the US economy were sound. Oh wait that wasn’t her, it was the other guy right! LOL!

The problem with the McCain campaign and McCain in reference to the handling of Sarah was the three E’s: ego, elitist thinking, and evasion: McCain’s ego that would not permit him to consider a different strategy to defeat Obama, the campaign handler’s use of the elitist-beltway template to manage Sarah, and the evasive behavior of the campaign to keep Sarah in seclusion and feed the MSM narrative that Sarah was ‘not ready’.

Exactly. Once again, techno, you’ve hit the proverbial nail on the head, especially the elitist-beltway template. As an inside the beltway-er myself, I know the exact type (worked with them even). They see but one path. Such a pity.

All he had to do was announce that he was 100% against the bailouts! He would have picked up more conservative votes and wooed many independants

Exactly.

McCain was just coming out of the debate where, when railing against earmarks, stated he would not hesitate to "name names". Up pops the economic crisis and the rushed bailout. McCain "suspends" his campaign and heads to Washington, but rather than standing up for the taxpayer and "naming names" regarding the Dems who are responsible, he just signs on to all of the excessive spending.

Totally lost opportunity to show some leadership.

"The McCain campaign took this person and completely botched her assets."

Glad to see "key republicans on Capitol Hill" have finally figured out what we all here were screaming even as it was happening.

Pathetic. We were had by a sorry bunch of careerist a-holes, McCain first among them.

the McCain campaign sure seemed like it was designed not to offend.

What can you say about a candidate who repudiates his allies and lavishes a character endorsement on his opponent?

I think that wasn’t so much the GOP as cross-over voters in New Hampshire that brought him back to life and then the media played him up as the front runner leaving the sheep who shouldn’t even vote to go out and vote for him in SC and FL.

I like Palin, Joe the Plumber, and the governor of Louisiana. I love Duncan Hunter.

Remember how the MSM bragged on McCain early in the primaries? They picked him for us because they thought he couldn’t win. By the time my state was able to vote it was all over. I didn’t even vote in the primaries because McCain was already selected. I sent money to Fred Thompson and hoped he’d win and pick Duncan Hunter as his running mate. They both folded early and the media kept talking up McCain. Huckbee in the mix didn’t help either. The MSM is going to run down every Republican that shows any promise for 2012, they are doing it to Palin now. Someone smarter than I am is going to have to make a plan.
