LARGO, Md. -- The owner of a Largo liquor store shot and killed a man in an attempted robbery Friday morning, police said.

A man entered Kettering Liquors in the 10600 block of Campus Way South about 7:30 a.m., announced a robbery and pulled out a gun, police said. One of the owners pulled out a shotgun and shot and killed the robber, police said.

“It’s tragic. Somebody died today,” said Bill Miles, of Kettering Liquors. “The good news is it wasn’t one of us. It was the bad guy.”

Three owners and a deliveryman were in the store at the time. None of them was injured.

Police are investigating.

My favorite source for info concerning defensive shotgun loads. He chooses #1 buck over #4.

I fail to see how this is tragic.

It appears that the thief was ready to commit murder as well as robbery.

Potentially how many lives were saved by ending this person’s career as an armed thief.

Not to mention the taxpayer dollars in trying him ,hopefully convicting him, incarcerating him, and then the appeals.

If this story is as it happened, and there are no extenuating circumstances, let us have more of the same, with a few public hangings thrown into the bargain.

Thank goodness they didn’t use and eeeeeeevil handgun !.....:o)

Federal has a tactical highbrass no 1B with 27 of them little pellet thingies in .32 caliber as well ! Albeit for 3.5 inch 12 ga. Good stuff if Obambi only lets me keep a goose gun and my hacksaw.

I think the perp qualifies for a Darwin Award. :-) I've never been a big shotgun fan. However, the youngest here in the house decided that he was, so he bought a Mossberg 500 12ga. I don't know much about it except that it's different that one I had years ago. It's got two rails from the pump back to the bolt and it's got a factory camo paint job, and ports on top of the barrel and a choke that screws in and out. I "think" it's configured for turkey hunting. I think it kicks like the devil, so I don't mess with it much. Anyway, when he bought it, he stocked up on ammo and started finding out exactly what this thing would penetrate and what it would NOT. He figured out pretty fast that #6 high brass would make a mess of any living thing and probably NOT penetrate and older house wall. Plus, the choke on it holds a very tight pattern out to about 100 feet or so. He knows more about the choke than I do, but he says it's a GOOD one. I did show him how to make a cut shell...an old bear hunters trick. :-) He thought that was cool, but I warned him to take the choke out of the gun if he was going to be shooting them often.

Anyway....I say pin a Darwin Award on this idiot who tried to rob the liquor store! Pin a Good Citizen and Patriot award on the liquor store owner!

Please describe a cut shell. I tried to search for it but all I could come up with is that they are illegal for hunting in Michigan.

No...”cut shell”. We used to do this for bear hunting. It basically lets you blow a huge hole in anything within 100 feet using relatively light shot (i.e. 7 1/2). It also increases transfer of kinetic energy on target and assists with things such as penetration of (non-armored) vehicles. I won’t post it publicly because admin mods will just remove it. :-)

Shotgun shells are usually made of a brass plated steel base with a plastic body that holds the wad and shot.

A “cut” shell is where the plastic is partially cut, just above the base, leaving a couple of little strips to hold everything together. When the shell is fired, the entire body of the shell is blown out of the barrel, leaving the base to be ejected. When the body of the shell hits anything, it acts like a large prefragmented projectile, and has about the same effect as if the shotgun were fired into the object from about a foot away.

Shells were not designed to function this way, so I don’t recommend it. Much easier just to buy some slugs, and they are more effective at long range anyway.

If you think slugs are expensive, buy a cheap Lee Loader and a Lee slug mold and make your own for about 10% of the factory price.
