North Carolina's probation system, designed to help low-level offenders rebuild their lives and stay out of costly prisons, is risking public safety by neglecting or losing track of thousands of criminals.

Carson killing suspects were on probation

Don’t worry, though. If any Duke lacrosse players throw parties, the Durham police will be right on the job,
and spend millions trying to find out something else they might have done wrong...
If I make a mistake and kill a patient, the legal system is all over me. If these legal creeps make a mistake and give probation to a criminal who kills, where are the legal ramifications for the creeps? Seems to me they should be just as liable as I am.
Ditto
Where are the legal ramifications for the Governor and that publicity hog Roy Cooper?

Reckon when can we expect Drescher and crew to do a similar expose’ on the Lacrosse Frame?
LOL. Ummmmmm, January ‘11, the day after Roy Cooper is sworn in as the next Senator from North Carolina?
Thanks for the ping, abb! This story is frustrating and overwhelming. It shows the out of control problem of crime in the triangle area but it is also, I am certain, a mirror image of many cities in the US. I’ll bet it could have been written about many of the big “blue” cities- Detroit, LA, St. Louis, Philadelphia...
In the meantime, those of us who actually work for a living and obey laws are victimized by scum that should be in jail.
Unfortunately, I am not very optimistic that it’s all going to turn around soon, either. With the economy in the tank, there is going to be even less money for reform of parole systems.
I think Joseph Neff did the best he could at the time, considering the mindset of N&O bosses. He probably had to beg them to let him publish this article.
Actually, I have to give the N&O credit here. This is not about the Carson case itself, but the larger, systemic problem of probation overall and state government screwing the pooch...most of all our idiot governor. Notice that he refused to answer any questions.
Yeah, you can murder and rob, just don’t pee on a bush...
