An Ugly Attack on Mormons

The easiest targets for an organized campaign against religious freedom of conscience.

By Jonah Goldberg

Did you catch the political ad in which two Jews ring the doorbell of a nice working-class family? They barge in and rifle through the wife’s purse and then the man’s wallet for any cash. Cackling, they smash the daughter’s piggy bank and pinch every penny. “We need it for the Wall Street bailout!” they exclaim.

No? Maybe you saw the one with the two swarthy Muslims who knock on the door of a nice Jewish family and then blow themselves up?

No? Well, then surely you saw the TV ad in which two smarmy Mormon missionaries knock on the door of an attractive lesbian couple. “Hi, we’re from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints!” says the blond one with a toothy smile. “We’re here to take away your rights.” The Mormon zealots yank the couple’s wedding rings from their fingers and then tear up their marriage license.

As the thugs leave, one says to the other, “That was too easy.” His smirking comrade replies, “Yeah, what should we ban next?” The voice-over implores viewers: “Say no to a church taking over your government.”

Obviously, the first two ads are fictional because no one would dare run such anti-Semitic or anti-Muslim attacks.

The third ad, however, was real. It was broadcast throughout California on Election Day as part of the effort to rally opposition to Proposition 8, the initiative that successfully repealed the right to same-sex marriage in the state.

What was the reaction to the ad? Widespread condemnation? Scorn? Rebuke? Tepid criticism?

Nope.

The Los Angeles Times, a principled opponent of Proposition 8, ran an editorial lamenting that the “hard-hitting commercial” was too little, too late.

I really like the book of Enoch and the book of Jasher!

(Funny how we never hear you or other Mormons say, "I really like the original version of what later mushroomed into Doctrine & Covenants, the Book of Commandments, especially the 'Lectures of Faith' from Smith that somehow got deleted from inclusion in the 'new'-fangled D&C).

mary, mary, mary .... we have Mormon bashers, we have Catholic bashers, we have Evangelical bashers ... we have Muslim bashers and we have Jewish bashers. This is an equal opportunity bashing haven ... I avoid the religious threads except on the days my blood pressure is too low.

I do believe in the Bible as expressed here several times. Do I believe everything is there? No. The evidence seems to back me up.

Pray tell, Reno. When was the last time you said: I do believe in the Doctrine & Covenants as expressed...Do I believe everything doctrinally expressed is there [from what was in the original]. No. The evidence backs me up.(?)

I have received a witness from God and I trust him far more than I trust you. [DU]

But do you have this inner testimony from God? (see especially the bold-face):

We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is the testimony: God HAS GIVEN US ETERNAL LIFE, and this life is in his Son. He who HAS the Son has life; he who does not HAVE the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that YOU MAY KNOW THAT YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE (1 John 5:9-13)

Do you have the same inner divine testimony offered to every true Christian? Our calling and election made sure that we may KNOW (not guess, not wonder, not surmise, not hope for) that we HAVE [present tense] eternal life!!!

“... we have Muslim bashers...”

That’s against the law now, isn’t it?

Re: 1 Nephi 14:10 describing the non-church of the Lamb as the church of the devil -- what Mormons say is us (being the church of the devil).

Apocalyptic literature is dualistic. Since it deals with types, everything boils down to opposing principles: love and hate, good and evil, light and dark. [Reno]

Oh, that helps. Not only are we -- according to the Mormons -- the church of the devil...the great whore of all the earth -- but we're "boiled down" to also being hate[ful]...evil...and dark, eh?

...there are only two categories in the realm of religion: religion that will save and religion that won't. The former is the Church of the Lamb, and the latter, no matter how well intentioned, is a counterfeit.

So, not only are we as Mormons claim to be Satanic, whorish world-wide, hate[ful], evil, and dark, but counterfeit to boot. (What other compliments do you have up your sleeve to add to this stellar list?)

Furthermore, you are a heretic at least in this statement you claim above, for religion in and of itself doesn't save anyone! The man-God, Jesus Christ, saves! Anybody or anyTHING -- even a religion -- competing with Jesus as Savior is an outright idol!

In the historical sense, though, only one entity can be the great and abominable church. Well-intentioned churches would thus not qualify as the mother of abominations described in 1 Nephi 13. They do not slay the saints of God nor seek to control civil governments nor pursue wealth, luxury, and sexual immorality.

Oh, gee thanks. Only our spiritual ancestor -- our "mom" church way back then -- actually qualified as "abominable"...(but only because we don't go so far as to kill, run for public office, or pursue riches and sex outside of marriage...which I guess means if we seek to control civil governments by running for public office, why that apparently would throw us right back into qualifying for "abominability?"

In either the apocalyptic sense or the historical sense, individual orientation to the Church of the Lamb or to the great and abominable church is not by membership but by loyalty. Just as there are Latter-day Saints who belong to the great and abominable church because of their loyalty to Satan and his lifestyle, so there are members of other churches who belong to the Lamb because of their loyalty to him and his lifestyle. Membership is based more on who has your heart than on who has your records.

So, in a perfect round-about way, you actually are saying here that the churches we belong to are indeed Satanic, after all...but our hearts may be disloyal to him...and, depending upon our heartthrobbing (or better stated, lack of it) after Lucifer, we may escape the consequences of such Satanic church membership. (Gee, do we say a collective thanks?)

Well, at least, even though your answer doesn't always cut to the chase, you've confirmed for one & all members of non-churches that LDS do indeed believe our churches to be downright Satanic (even if we as individual members aren't)...coupled, of course, with all the additional ugly descriptions of what a Satanic church would encompass.

Finally, this STILL takes me back to your comment from 692 -- which is why I raised the question to begin with: You said to GF in #692 I respect your beliefs & wish you the best in them. The difference is that I'm not in the business of berating your beliefs & calling your church satanic & otherwise.

Yet you admitted to me by direct implication that you indeed consider our churches to be "satanic." How is that any "difference" to what your claim was to GF?

And what about when Mormon-bashing is against the law? Should I remain calm then too?

You need to learn to tell the difference, FRiend.

You might want to learn to demonstrate the difference.

From my perspective, as an LDS FReeper, there's little difference. If you want me to care about the differences that you have with my deeply held faith, or whatever, then you need to demonstrate that you actually care.

I have no idea. But in the case of Jesus, HE is the ONLY begotten son of God. There are no others.

On this we agree.

Go with God.

Well, you know what I think of the BOM so no use in hoeing that row again. For the Christian, the Bible is the source we use because it was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, as 2nd Timothy writes it, and it has survived all these years because God took care of it. I won’t convince you and you won’t convince me, Reno. Let’s just stay friendly...

Well stated. The Bible the only holy book - ever, in history.

The BOM, the Koran, and the mutterings of Jim Jones can all be placed in the same trash bin.

The Bible is unique - and it is still the best selling book in the entire world.

I read an article about how North Koreans would suffer torture and death for even one page of the Bible. That demonstrates its power.

The Book of Mormon is a manufactured Amway brochure by comparison.

Once you are resurrected, you are no longer "Man" or "Mortal"...

The FATHER was NEVER 'resurrected' - was HE?

So; answer the question:

And the Father: is HE fully man and GOD at the same time too?

The Bible has existed for centuries, but you are aware there isn’t a known original in existence right?

The BoM has been around for less than 2 centuries, but you are aware there isn’t a known COPY; right?

All Mormons have is the WORD of a few men - the SAME men, that when OTHER words they have uttered during their lives are posted here on FR; LDS Organization members then say not to follow their words!

What's up with THAT??

You HAVE seen my post where even the Leaders of MORMONism FAILED to follow the Bible as WELL as the TEACHING of the BoM?

But Mormon repentance means never committing the same sin again for what you repented.

So much for that 70 * 7 thingy!
