:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Critical Threats: Blank When None
The Age of 'Celebrity Terrorism'

Quite apart from the scores murdered and the hundreds injured, what the Mumbai terrorists really wanted was an exaggerated - and preferably extreme - reaction on the part of governments, the media and public opinion.

In these terms, the attackers received as much attention as they could possibly have hoped for, and the Mumbai outrage can only be described as a very significant terrorist success.

The attack received saturation coverage in the world's media from the outset. Read More

I will join you in hoping everything is alright with Ian. As far as the TM thread it probably isn’t a problem as it’s considerably slower than it was a couple of years ago.

Definitely slower, but it’s going to drive me crazy that the thread has 2008 in the title.

Should we modify the title?

Top FBI official: al-Qaida ‘still our no. 1 concern’

WASHINGTON - Pull out your cell phone, start writing a text message and you’ll probably notice the device guessing what words you are writing. It will even offer to finish them for you. It’s called predictive text.

Federal law enforcement and intelligence authorities have adopted the idea, along with a new way of thinking. New shadowy, transnational terror organizations forced U.S. Homeland Security authorities to change the way they work, says Michael J. Heimbach, assistant director of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division.

The FBI’s goal is to stay a step ahead of these threats.

The predictive method is broken down into an interlocking, three-pronged approach called “find, fix and finish.” ....

BALTIMORE (AP) — A Rwandan professor has been suspended with pay from teaching French at Goucher College while officials there investigate claims that he was involved in the 1994 genocide in his home country.

College President Sanford Ungar told faculty and students in an e-mail Saturday that Professor Leopold Munyakazi, 59, was removed from teaching after officials learned he had been indicted in 2006 on genocide charges in Rwanda....

Pakistani Gunmen Kidnap American Head of UN Office, Kill Driver

Suspected Islamic militants abducted the American director of the United Nations refugee agency in southwest Pakistan yesterday and killed his driver, police said.

Four gunmen in the city of Quetta halted the car of John Solecki, head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees office, as he drove from home to work, said Khalid Masood, the Quetta police superintendent. It was the most high-profile abduction of a Westerner in several years, and the third attack in five months on Americans working in Pakistan’s ethnic Pashtun zone bordering Afghanistan in the country’s west.....

Taliban Take Second American Hostage
The name of the first American being held by the Taliban? I’ve been asked by my moral and intellectual superiors in the MSM not to mention his name nor to claim that the Taliban have taken him hostage. He is, after all, a reporter who works for a major U.S. newspaper. Never mind that the be silent and wait it out strategy only works when you are negotiating a ransom. In the case of Islamist extremists who have become hip to the new realities of the decreasing propaganda value of taking American hostages, then it’s a silly dead end.

When he’s released we’ll know exactly why. And if he’s murdered? Oh, I will name names.....

Iran has launched a sattlite into orbit. This is nearly the final hurdle to having a vehicle capable of delivering a nuke warhead. Iran has had difficulties with the three stage rocket it used in the past. Dependability is essential before mounting a nuke. All in all, this is not a good thing.

Al Qaeda Leader Ridicules Obama

Al Qaeda’s number two man, Ayman al-Zawahiri, has spoken again, this time in a video released today in which he mocks President Obama and urges Muslims to engage in jihad. His speech is a sign, experts say, that al Qaeda is nervous about Obama’s popularity in the Arab world....

Al Qaeda No. 2 releases second message of 2009

Al Qaeda’s second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, released a new audio message Tuesday, condemning Israel and calling for renewed attacks.

The message shows a grouping of photographs that include an old photo of al-Zawahiri, three dead children and a collage of world leaders: French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Speaking critically of the recent conflict in Gaza, al-Zawahiri blamed “western collaboration” in supporting Israel and blamed Israel’s allies for not distinguishing “the killer from the victim.”

He also criticized U.S. President Obama for not mentioning Gaza during his inaugural address.....

Qaeda’s Zawahiri mocks Obama over Gaza

Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri mocked US President Barack Obama for his “deep concern” for Gaza and urged Muslims to rise up against enemy aggression, in an audiotape released on jihadist forums Tuesday.

A speech entitled “Sacrifices of Gaza and Plots” was contained in a video produced by As-Sahab, Al-Qaeda’s media arm, and made available by SITE Intelligence Group.

Against the backdrop of a still image of Zawahiri, Arab leaders and dead Palestinian children, Zawahiri stressed that the “Crusader-Zionist” campaign of Western and Arab states and Israel will not be broken or deterred unless it suffers human and material losses.

He called for Muslims to overthrow Arab regimes and said demonstrations, which he had previously recommended, were “insufficient” to face the tanks and planes of the enemy.....

Do you suppose that Ayman secretly thinks he’s in line for one of The O’s cabinet posts after we get a couple more tax cheats disqualified and is just pumping up his creds with the Code Pinkers?

No good news on the western front either:

NKorea may be set for long-range missile launch
2/3/2009 12:40 AM GMT

North Korea appears to be preparing to test-launch an intercontinental missile amid growing tensions on the peninsula, a South Korean intelligence source was quoted as saying Tuesday. The source, quoted by Yonhap news agency, said US and South Korean intelligence agencies have recently spotted a train carrying a long cylindrical object believed to be a Taepodong-2 missile.

Not that big of a grain when you consider the islamic presence in Europe (take France for instance - places there the police don't dare go).
