Charlotte, N.C. - One thing the financial crisis shows is that the United States is in trouble because Americans have stopped making stuff.
It used to be that we made a lot of stuff: televisions, clothes, washing machines, radios, typewriters, shoes, telephones, and furniture. And we also used to make the stuff out of which stuff was made: steel, aluminum, plastic, rubber, glass, and electrical components. Today that's largely made overseas. They send us their stuff and we send them our money.
It also used to be that Americans liked to make stuff. Think of all the things Thomas Edison invented. Or consider Henry Ford, who made the car affordable, perfected the assembly line, and paid workers a decent wage. Countless others, such as my grandfather, worked as toolmakers and machinists because they liked to work with their hands. Today we rely on people around the world to do that innovation for us.

I have been promoting MADE IN USA goods for years.
When I was still in business(wholesale apparel),
I demanded only MADE IN USA merchandise.
I have Levis jeans I purchased twenty years ago, Jockey briefs & New Balance all MADE IN USA that are still in good shape.
Yes, you can buy cheaper goods but like my father used to say “Buy cheap, get cheap.”
And there are companies out there like Ameerican Apparel
who not only mfg. but wholesale & retail their MADE IN USA merchandise.

Value added is valued added, whether it happens in a Starbucks or a bank or a factory. The myth that only making stuff adds value is economically illiterate. The physiocrats pretended only growing things added value, some industry and commerce were an utter waste and only agriculture really mattered. Has-beens always tell that same silly lie.
In the early days of our nation, we imported just about everything. What we did have....was good natural resources, lotsa land...and hard working people.
It’s an excellent idea- but how do we do it? Could it be that through outsourcing our industrial base and encouraging debt, we’ve dug ourselves in so deep, we can’t get out?
If a positive outcome is possible, I want to read it.
We're a “service economy” now. We make only lawyers. We have laws for every little petty thing you can imagine.
Even if they bring the jobs back here they will be filled by illegals and H1B Visa holders.
Yup. America is becoming less business friendly all the time. Just wait to see all of the petty EPA rules that come out over the next four years. Look at places in NY and CA where the states levy massive fines for insignificant infractions.
quality, quality, quality...
“If” USA were to emphasize “quality” like the Germans do instead of trying to compete “cheap” with the Asians who run sweat shops; America could & would prosper like the Germans.
Look at the Cadillac CTS-V which is as good as the BMW M5 or the Chevy Corvette which is as good as the super-cars out there that sell for twice and sometimes three times as much.
For starters, we could eliminate the corporate & personal income tax which would encourage more investment in American mfg.
Too bad McCain lost, he wanted more nuclear power plants built which would immediately create more good-paying mfg. jobs in the short run and cheaper electricity in the long run for further mfg. opportunities . But with Obama, not much chance of that happening.
Otherwise we are going to eventually be left to trying to purchase armaments from our enemies.
Made in America just doesn’t mean what it once did. Often now, it really means “Made in America.... by illegal immigrants, mostly from Mexico and Central America”.
