Mitt Romney Takes on Detroit

By Garance Franke-Ruta

The race for 2012 is already on in the Republican Party, and today failed 2008 contender Mitt Romney appeared to take a stand sure to complicate any future presidential bid. In an op-ed bluntly titled, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," the former Massachusetts governor argued against the automobile salaries and pension systems that have for decades helped define the good life in industrial Michigan, where Romney won the GOP primary this winter and where his father was once governor.

Ronald Reagan

Military service
After completing fourteen home-study Army Extension Courses, Reagan enlisted in the Army Enlisted Reserve[22] on April 29, 1937, as a private assigned to Troop B, 322nd Cavalry at Des Moines, Iowa.[23] He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on May 25, 1937, and on June 18 was assigned to the 323rd Cavalry.[24]

Reagan was ordered to active duty for the first time on April 18, 1942. Due to his nearsightedness, he was classified for limited service only, which excluded him from serving overseas.[25] His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California, as a liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office.[26] Upon the approval of the Army Air Force (AAF), he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF on May 15, 1942, and was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the 1st Motion Picture Unit (officially, the “18th AAF Base Unit”)in Culver City, California.[26] On January 14, 1943 he was promoted to First Lieutenant and was sent to the Provisional Task Force Show Unit of This Is The Army at Burbank, California.[26] He returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit after completing this duty and was promoted to Captain on July 22, 1943.[23]

In January 1944, Captain Reagan was ordered to temporary duty in New York City to participate in the opening of the sixth War Loan Drive. He was re-assigned to the 18th AAF Base Unit on November 14, 1944, where he remained until the end of World War II.[23] He was recommended for promotion to Major on February 2, 1945, but this recommendation was disapproved on July 17 of that year.[27] He returned to Fort MacArthur, California, where he was separated from active duty on December 9, 1945.[27] By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the AAF.[23]

I totaly agree about Reagan but the way most are telling it you think he was in combat, anyway my point there are many ways to service this country even if one does not get an temporal commission from the military.

The Lord has his soldiers too.

It is SOME of you folks who are doing the bending and twisting of Mitt and also LDS intent.

but you will not allow yourselves to acknowledged.

It would cramp your agenda.

Being drafted into religious service is not the same as voluntary military service, and equating the two is insulting to military families who know the sacrifice their sons, daughters, husbands and wives are making.

Please do not say it is the same thing.

I don’t hate Palin. Now that this election is over, I will try to give her a fair chance. I did my part and voted for McCain. I tried to limit my criticisms of her before the election. Isn’t this all silly, I don’t know the woman. I think I got a little emotional, probably from always seeing Mitt Romney get attacked. I thought that was unfair, he is a good man. I just thought some people were almost worshiping Palin. That’s where I was coming from.

No you do not "totally agree" about Reagan or you would not have said:

This thinking is ahort sighted one of our greatest presidents Ronald Reagan had no military record, period

You, like many of your peers, got caught yet again putting forth an untruth, and instead of admitting it and moving on, you try and walk around it and act as if you said something else, and everyone else is just being obtuse refusing to see your brilliant and logically argument.

You have learned well from your teachers.

As far as service, military service is military service, period as you would say.

And there is only one real agenda here, be it me, Jim Robinson or any one else, and that is to support Conservatism and those politicians who represent those ideals, regardless of whether they are religious peers or not. So then I have to ask, given Mitts lack of Conservative credentials, established facts and the position of the majority here in regard to Romney, what exactly is your agenda, and that of your peers?

Stop implying things that were never said

Romney callings on earth is different, just as your callings on earth is different, and so is mine.

If many of you are honest you will see how your trying to impose upon another to live up to your person ideals is another version of tyranny

How s it tyranny to request that you do not equate voluntary military service ~ in service to our country ~ with a religious draft?

Can you honestly say you are not doing that?

****

There is a big difference between voluntary and force.

One choice and the other is coerce which is how your attitude is projected towards Mitt because he did not choose your option.

So there was a period that was voluntary and than later on the draft was put in motion.

So if Mitt was serving his mission when that time period was in voluntary mode one must take into account that congress NEVER declared Vietnam as a war that is why it was voluntary.

It was after Mitt return that the draft was institude and still congress NEVER declared vietnam a war or recognized by congress as a war.

As witness there was a lot of confusion going on because congress never took a BOLD stand.

According the the US Congress, Vietnam war was not recognized as a US war, yet the coverage in the papers were the “Vietnam war” which it was for the people that lived there.

See how important words are and assumption implyied to many who did not have a handle on the language.

****

~ with a religious draft?

There is no draft in serving a mission it is a committment made to the Lord years of ago by many LDS boys to live a worthy walk in order to serve a mission.

It is not you wake up one day and say I think I will serve a mission.

Thanks. I recall that speech and agree, but thought there was one I may have missed given the content and accusation in the post. I thought Palin acknowledged Hillary’s accomplishment (cracks in the glass ceiling)but wasn’t praising Hillary or agreeing with her policies, etc.

We all get crazy at times. One of the reasons I like this place so much is because of the incredible amount of information available. I wouldn’t have known much about most of the politicians if it weren’t for this site.
