Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is batting down the hype that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin heads into 2012 as the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination.
Palin energized the Republican base after GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) tapped her as his running mate and she has tried to preserve her high public profile since Election Day.
But Gingrich, an architect of the Republican revolution of 1994, took Palin down a notch, asserting that she would not become the party’s leader, as some have predicted.
“I think that she is going to be a significant player,” said Gingrich during an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation”. “But she’s going to be one of 20 or 30 significant players. She’s not going to be the de facto leader.”
Since the defeat of the GOP ticket, Palin has pursued an aggressive media strategy, scheduling a full slate of interviews to keep her face on television.

Let me put it this way to the Newt fans.
Was Goldwater a conservative in his latter years because he is credited for sparking the movement in his earlier years? The answer is No.
Things change. And people change. Whatever he was, he is now a man who embraces Pelosi, Hillary Clinton and Al Gore now. He promotes liberal principles in the name of “tri-partisanship”. Maybe he mixes some conservative policies in there but guess what? So did Bush, doesn’t make either of them conservative.
I just wonder what it would take for people to acknowledge he’s NOT of us anymore. Would it take registering as a Democrat? personally I’m of the opinion it’s not the party but the principles espoused that determines if you are conservative or not.

Other than Mike Huckabee at 52, all of this years crop of POTUS candidates were at least 60 and older..
We need fresh young blood with proven conservative creditals..

But as I judge most comments on this thread, it must be more fun to bash Newt as some sort of Manchurian RINO than to read and analyze what he actually said!
BUT ... all that said, Palin has not really proved herself as a party leader yet. Gingrich is right. And as for there being no de facto leader, he is also correct about that. The closest thing our movement has to leadership at the moment is Talk Radio, and Limbaugh, Hannity, et al are not politicians. As of right now, we really have no political leadership at all, de facto or otherwise. Frankly, I don't even see an heir apparent. I am more than a bit alarmed by all the FReepers who're selling out to Palin completely at this point. She has a lot of work to do if she wants to be leader, and that work will include more than just making media appearances.
Arrogance and self-aggrandizement (believing YOU are the only one(s) who know how to read) are not admirable traits. Most posters on FR are supportive and helpful. They are appreciative of alternative theories. Suggest you tone down your condescending attitude toward "most posters here."

Gingrich is right. She won’t be.
She has to run for re-election as Governor in 2010 and will likely be maneuvered into promising to serve out her term. It does not matter that Democrats have done that and reneged.
It will matter for her because she’ll be asked to swear to God.
And that will be that for 2012.
I disagree with Newt on this one.
But what do I know?

Newt wouldn’t be able to win his old Congressional seat.
So many react to the headline...so few read the article.
I like Michael Steele (except his support for AA), but he needs to show that he can win an elective office above Lt. Gov. before he will be taken seriously on the national scene.
I'm amazed every time I see someone paint Free Republic with the broad brush of cynicism just because they see a post they don't agree with.
Or to make themselves seem "special."
