The "October Surprise" - a lttle early
vanity | November 16, 2008 | Lancey Howard

Posted on 11/15/2008 10:26:30 PM PST by Lancey Howard

If the Presidential campaign of 2008 was a football game, the game-changing play came when the alleged "looming meltdown" was announced. The stench of this announcement was so strong that it still staggers the mind that nobody stopped and said, "Wait a minute...! You, Henry Paulson, just discovered today that there is an imminent economic meltdown so catastrophic that Congress needs to pass a $700 billion bailout bill by freaking Monday??"

It made no sense on the face of it, and I figured it had to be a setup. I mean, this horrific news about global economic meltdown breaks just six weeks before a Presidential election?? I was born at night, but not last night. Then when Obama curiously and suddenly took a low profile I knew it was a setup. The Obama team knew what was going on. It was the Democrats' "October surprise", launched a little early and very likely set up by George Soros, who already had God-knows-how-much money invested in this and other campaigns around the nation.

Of course, McCain played right into the scheme by "suspending" his campaign and jumping on his white horse to race back to Washington and take charge and.... Well, who knows what he thought he could do. It doesn't matter, because he ultimately contributed nothing to the process and only made himself look impotent.

All the while, Obama kept his distance as he quietly sat and watched and chuckled. McCain ended up accomplishing basically nothing - - and getting almost no TV face time, to boot! After a day or two of floundering around he finally bailed out (no pun intended) of Washington and made his way back to that debate he wasn't supposed to make... You know - - the debate Obama wouldn't agree to postpone? And Congress did what it did (handed 700 billion taxpayer dollars over to Hank Paulson) without any help from McCain.

Ball game.

The biggest question remaining is: Who orchestrated this election fix, and was George W. Bush in on it? (Yeah, I know - - where's my tin-foil hat. The timing of this was all just an amazing coincidence. Right.)

My wife and I just returned home from the dedication ceremony for the new National Veterans Cemetery in Washington Crossing. It was a magnificent affair, well done. Arlen Specter was the keynote speaker. Prior to his speech we listened to nice commentary from a number of politicians including Patrick Murphy, Mike Fitzpatrick (who got the most applause) and even your Congressman, Joe Sestak.

All I’m doing at this point is keeping my fingers crossed that that steaming pantload 0bama will leave the military in the hands of the grownups.

Once they announced this crisis the investors reacted and the market went into freefall from that day forward.

Precisely.

Like I said in an earlier post on this thread, "self-fulfilling prophecy". Paulson and the rest of those animals could not possibly have sabotaged the economy and stirred a panic any more effectively than the way they did it. There was a reason for doing what they did - - improve the election odds for Hussein - - and it stank to high heaven.

But apparently nobody in Washington gives a rat's behind.

Sorry, no sale.

If Reagan was “the great communicator”, then Bush was “the pathetic mute”.

At this point I can only hope that something comes out of the many court-cases that have been instituted to force an open investigation of Obama's true origins, though I am not hopeful as the Justice System is no longer just.

The Justice Department is a sick joke. It is strictly a political office whose role is to carry out carefully orchestrated thuggery for the party in charge.... or whichever party happens to be more deeply embedded in the Justice Department.

The Bush Justice Department

Many conservatives burrowed within the Department of Justice have long complained that Gonzales (and therefore, Bush) has permitted career government employees and hold-overs from Democratic Administrations to remain in perches of power and thereby water down conservative directives from the top. As one conservative and Federalist Society member in the Justice Department told me: “This is definitely not Ronald Reagan’s Justice Department, I assure you. You have holdovers from Clinton calling the shots in a lot of places here.”

Not only just 6 weeks from the election, but ALSO just when McCain pulled 10 points ahead of UHHbama in the polls.

Yep. What a coincidence (cough).
I don't know if it was 10 points, but there was clearly Palin-fueled momentum on McCain's side, and he was picking up some steam.

I’m still waiting on President Bush to spend some time with the American people via TV to explain how this meltdown has happened, how it will improve with the bailouts, or how Paulson is adjusting plans based on market response. I think I’ll be waiting forever.

Girlene, don't hold your breath. They are making it up as they go along.

I've pondered this topic but I can't see how anyone or group could have pulled this off just at the perfect time it did.

Everybody has their complicated reasons on why John McCain didn't win. Mine is if there was no economic meltdown right at this time McCain would have won.

Have you looked at the market prior to the first Congressional Bailout vote? It had been the normal fluctuations of ups and downs before that day.

Yep. Almost everybody was going about their business as usual, with scarcely a care in the world.

Sure, the constant beatdown by the Democrat newsrooms,(ie., their relentless effort to back up their party's candidates by helping to portray "the economy" as approaching depression-era status) had many of the more gullible of the masses a bit concerned, but this election-eve "all in" scheme by Paulson and his Wall Street cronies amounted to nothing less than treason.

Do not expect the "Justice" Department to get anywhere near touching this mess, not with a ten-mile pole.

Why hasn’t Bush fired Paulson???

That has been a burning question on my mind. I would have fired Paulson, given this crisis that just popped in all of a sudden.

Uh, because they are on the same page?

Please correct any misperceptions here (not a great background in economics!): I’ve been questioning all along exactly what our situation is, because initially I didn’t see indications at all of the widespread financial meltdown. It’s largely a matter of confidence, right? And I just didn’t see evidence of lagging retail sales, for example. It seems to me that we believed we were in recession only because we were TOLD we were n recession. No I guess there’s downturn regardless of how we started out. Was it manufactured?

If not flat-out "manufactured", then at the very least it was greatly exacerbated by the actions of the Administration and Congress. They say the markets quake every time the Fed chairman coughs, so can you imagine what happens when the Treasury Secretary proclaims the end of the "global economy" as we know it? It turns a nervous tick into a seizure of panic; it quickly feeds on itself (as you correctly observed) and becomes a "self-fulfilling prophecy".

Paulson and the rest of those animals could not possibly have sabotaged the economy and stirred a panic any more effectively than the way they did it. There was a reason for doing what they did - - improve the election odds for Barack Hussein Obama.

But hey, I'm just tilting at windmills here.

LH

No, actually you are not tilting at windmills. Look back at my posts here a couple of years ago when Alan Greenspan came out (even when he was no longer "the man") and said housing was going to crash... he didn't say it one time, he said it over and over until people started to get scared and stop buying houses. I kept saying when they stopped it didn't make sense since interest rates were at a record low level as was unemployment...but Greenspan said it often enough he turned it into a self-fulfilling prophecy...

Granted prices were going up too fast and all that, but what they Fed (who Greenspan no longer controlled) could have done was thing that were much more subtle and would not have led to this massive housing melt down that, indeed, affects every corner of our society... They could have encouraged our then GOP congress to stiffen lending regulations, for example, so people who didn't have the income couldn't buy a $500K house when all they could afford was a $100K house.... what Greenspan did was every bit as irresponsible as Schumer hinting at Indy Mac and then the comment not long after AIG was bailed out that a larger insurance company was likely to fail and the stock market tanked.

But, then, WE the voters are at fault because we keep returning people like Schumer, Frank, Dodd, to office year after year.

McCain is one of the unsung heroes of the bailout - exposing once again the hypocrisy of the dem party - and deserves acknowledgment as such.

Had McCain called Pelosi's bluff, what would have happened? If the bill would have passed anyway, McCain would have come out smelling like a rose immediately (he'd campaigned against pork, so he'd have perfect cover). When the bill then proved to be a disaster, he'd be in even better shape.

If the bill would have failed, McCain would still have been in fine shape (as noted, he campaigned against pork, and there's really no excuse for all the pork in that thing). And the country would have been better off.

Too bad nobody had a podium that could explain to the public why the bill was precisely the wrong medicine.

”$3B windfall for ACORN and win the election”
Which would you rather have:
A) Give $3Billion to ACORN and win the election
B) Have a want-to-be terrorist as president and not give $3 billion to ACORN that day.

You have hit on the industry (housing/real estate) that I happen to work in. My colleagues and I have been saying exactly what you've been saying for at least two years. The fix has been in for some time now. I had forgottn that Mr. Andrea Mitchell was also in on the election fixing - - in fact, he apparently kicked it off. Figures...

McCain deserves all the criticism over how he dealt with this economic problem.

Lets say he did the right thing and rushed off to fix things.

Pelosi and a few other democrats went on vacation that week they had no intention in passing a bill. McCain could only lead the minority party the democrats would NEVER have helped him fix the issue at that time. It would be like the democrats handing McCain the presidency they wouldn’t even consider it.

On top of that Obama handed it perfectly in my opinion by just keeping a low profile when it came to a very unpopular bailout. It didn’t matter during an election if it was the right thing to do but to go there and lead the extremely unpopular bailout was just stupid during an election.

McCain was an idiot for thinking the democrats would help and not understanding that his image would be destroyed if he got a bill passed or not it was a win win for democrats.
