ABC News' Bret Hovell Reports: Appearing for the 14th time on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and appearing in his first television interview since losing the presidential election, John McCain said Tuesday that with all of the crises facing the country, it is time to move past the partisanship of campaign.
"Now its time for America to join together and support the man who was just elected president," the Arizona Senator told Leno.
"Its a great honor, its a great privilege, its an incredible thing that I was able to do," McCain said. "I salute, as you know, and admire and respect the winner: Senator -President-Elect Barack Obama."
McCain was greeted warmly by the Veterans Day crowd, who gave him what seemed to be an extended welcome.
Leno asked McCain what he has been up to in the last week, what external forces could have affected the way the election turned out, and, of course, about Sarah Palin.

... and we are still two months away from taking possession of the "vehicle", so to speak. I get the feeling the bight shiny 2009 Obama Mark 1 (or is that Marx 1?) is going to be a little embarrassing to own about a year from now.
"Third, you are here because you are real men and all real men like to fight. When you, here, everyone of you, were kids, you all admired the champion marble player, the fastest runner, the toughest boxer, the big league ball players, and the All-American football players. Americans love a winner. Americans will not tolerate a loser. Americans despise cowards. Americans play to win all of the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost nor will ever lose a war; for the very idea of losing is hateful to an American." --George S. Patton
Its a good strategery!
(to McCain, not to you, th)
McCain, you’re a jerk. Just cross the aisle and STAY THERE, already!!
Excellent!
Bingo. My heart sank when I heard that. What a stupid
Washington insider remark. I always felt there were TWO
Manchurian candidates in this election.
Yep, just like Bob Dole he saw it as a great honor for him to trot around the country and get the big accolades for having the nomination.
And now after losing he describes it simply as another man having been chosen. Not the least expression of what the Republicans standing for being important, especially at this critical economic time, and his regret that he wasn’t able to deliver for us in that sense.
He does really sound like someone who knew he’d have the wind at his back for the nomination if he never actually ran against ‘The One’ in the general.
And what’s with the Neiman-Marcus joke? Not condemning the lies of his backbiting advisers? Not even attempting to set the record straight?
Let’s make darned sure we don’t have another perfumed, ego-driven RINO up against Obama in ‘12!
Don’t worry. McCain will be back in the Senate helping Obama pass amnesty and a cap and trade system to address the global warming hoax.
Yep..... and it seemed very strange that he became the nominee for the pubbie ticket... when Romney and Thompson were the most popular. Almost as if this whole thing had been orchestrated from the beginning. (Oh well...I have my conspiracy theories)
I have never cared for RINO John McCain.....a feeling which was cemented when he cozied up to HC one too many times.
Your “straight talk” may be just what is needed to be posted over at the RNC’s “what are we doing wrong” website.
GOVERNOR PALIN should have been presented as GOVERNOR of Alaska, and that thread should have run true throughout the campaign ads (which should have featured her a lot and shown her at her GOVERNOR’S desk and video of her in that capacity). I think McCain came across as a Momma’s boy and as not being able to go anywhere without Cindy standing right behind him. That’s okay, but not all the time.
Instead, they allowed SNL and The View types to define Governor Palin as a silly, stupid, uneducated hick. Tina Fey had more face time than she did and defined her.
An honorable man would have not used Jay Leno to tell Sarah that what happen to her was wrong. McCain is a coward.
Don't forget, he had the lead in the polls till Sept 19th or so, when the market meltdown hit home. Instead of plotting an independent path, as he so often espoused, he went along with the program by signing onto that preposterous bailout bill. Had he voted no that would have guaranteed his win. Voting no would not have been a vote against the best thing for the country as he portrayed because it has been shown now to be a gravy train for the well connected. Furthermore, it will be used by the Zero and his congressional buffoons to buy a lifetime of democrat victories because as the axiom says, you can fool most of the people some of the time.
I never thought I would say this but I wish the electors when they vote, vote for Hillary!
Vince
I voted for that treacherous (made a career out of stabbing the GOP in the back to curry favor with the media & left) buffoon simply to vote against Obama. He can now take his platitudes and shove them.
McCain appeared to throw the fight somewhere in the middle rounds..
McCain can go back to ‘My Friends’ in the Senate and resume his stabing all conservatives in the back. Gawd, what a disgusting situation to vote for POS McCan’t to stop the Marxist!
