U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's historic victory does not bode well for comedians who have thrived on jokes about President George W. Bush, experts say.

Obama, who was backed by many Hollywood figures, will be inaugurated on January 20 as the United States' first black president against a backdrop of a global financial crisis and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Whether because he was the favorite of left-leaning comics, the historic nature of his election or that so far he has made few gaffes, comedians are finding little to joke about so far.

That's it ... Leno et al have already felt the fear.

Obama must not take office, IMO.

I detect a bug in the “reply to” for a removed comment #1.

Well it sounds like they would get exactly what they deserve.

They won’t say anything, because they don’t want to ding their own guy. Plus Bush didn’t have his own gestapo to take care of people who spoke out against him.

Okay, that's funnier than almost anything I've heard from professional comedians. Conservatives among the 95% getting tax cuts in all 58 or 59 states would probably laugh too at the idea that Obama has made few gaffes. I will agree with the last point. I'm finding little to joke about as I contemplate the grim reality of President Obama deciding whether I can keep my 401(k) or it gets spread around (euphemism for stolen), whether I can keep my guns or they get taken, and whether I can keep my right to free speech or it gets regulated into Fairness Doctrine oblivion. Nope, not funny at all.

No, they won’t be making as much fun of Obama as they did Bush, but they’ll continue to belittle and demean Republicans and Christians who deign to speak out against their Lord and Master.

Barack is eminently able to be made fun of, as he himself already demonstrated, referring laughingly to himself as “the one,” etc.

It’s just that no one wants to be so politically incorrect as to joke about the first black president, especially when he is regarded with a religious type fervor. However, I hope these guys will eventually bring themselves to do it, in the interests of racial equality if for no other reason.

Republicans are so out of the picture that it won’t make sense to make fun of them. There is no Newt Gingrich in the House. They really will have to find new material

Doonesbury is toast. He’s got nothing to work with.

“What the heck are the stand up comics, people like Jon Stewart, people like Bill Maher, Letterman, etc. going to joke about then?”

It has been a long time since these “comedians” had any material other than “Bush is stupid”, “McCain is old”, or “Palin is naive”. That got old years ago. We can only hope their shows go the way of major newspapers.

Could we start a bail-out program for comedians? Those who did the Bush routine nightly...need some financial help to get by for four years. I’m thinking of a $7 billion program...maybe run by Jon Stewart.

For pundits like Maher, Bush and Palin, and Palin’s children. should be good targets for another 6 months or more

Then there’s always the “religious right”-

True, and if even half the fears so many of have, there will be even less to joke about in the future.

When your comic strip becomes reality it's time to put the pen down.

"Maybe they can tell jokes about Emmanuel Goldstein. When they finish the jokes, they can project an image of Goldstein on the wall, so everyone can scream at it for a couple minutes."

It's frightening to think just how close the media has brought us to that juncture.
