Republicans desperate to rebuild their party are looking for a new leader, and former Sen. Fred Thompson may seek the job.
Thompson, a Tennessee conservative and former actor, is mulling a run for chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Though he ran a lackluster campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, he remains popular in his party because of his ability to articulate conservative values in a plainspoken way.
Fred isnt looking to run for national office again, a close Thompson adviser said, adding that no official decision had been made. He is looking to rebuild the party and help elevate the [conservative] movement and its principles.
While the Republican National Committee considers who will take the helm when the term of the current chairman, Mike Duncan of Kentucky, ends in January, conservatives in Congress are already working to re-brand their party.

As much as I like Sarah, I don't know if that is the position for her. Her talents might be put to better use in some other fashion.
or it could be the perfect place for her! lol

I supported Fred in the primaries but he needs to come out against McCain-Feingold, election reform, illegal immigration, etc. if he or anyone else wants to head the RNC.
Starve the RNC as long as it’s a RINO organization.
I think Fred would be very good as an assistant chairman. He’s smart and pretty conservative. But he’s a not ‘get out in front of the cameras and kiss babies’ type of guy. He’s more of a doer and thinker than a leader (which in today’s world is a ‘hope and change’ type).
Fred is a real nice guy.
Why are we thinking of anyone old? We need new conservative blood. Fire in their spirit. Looking to do more than just get along and be nice.
You’re not grasping the difference between the RNC and candidates who might run, and be frontrunner, for office.
Much as I love Fred, I do think we need a pit bull in that position. Bolton more closely resembles that description.
Don't trust anyone over 30.
Still totin my FRED 08 sticker! Fred would make a good restart for conservatives in the right, RIGHT direction, but I also think Newt can be good there too, he was great with Contract for America and we really need one again.
Fred or Newt, yeah there’s more good conservatives out there, but HNIC of RNC must also know the ropes to get anything done.
Newt?...maybe, but Fred is just to old and sleepy...no fire in the belly. If the Repubs want to win, they need a warrior...not a philosopher!!
He's perfect for the GOP.
Fred may be quite good in that position.
To really begin to rebuild this party and to take on the task of an EXPANSIVE education of the voting public, you need creative leaders. Such leaders have to come up with pragmatic IDEAS, must have the energy and charisma to inspire enthusiasm and energy in others. Newt is a GOOD idea man.....and has demonstrated his energy on the DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW initiative (and several others). I really like Fred and supported him in the primaries (first time in a long time that I gave $$$), but he honestly does not inspire the energy needed. I also like Michael Steele, who is soundly conservative, energetic and has a good sense of humor. Overall, because of the job description....I’d have to pick Newt. (By the way....no one’s perfect.)
Newt will write another Contract with America II and get this Country back on the road to Conservatism, Traditionalism, and Constitutionalism.
Hey he was my first choice for president.
Neato.
Of course I grasp the difference. So what? She can take control now, run later or do whatever she likes. Resigning from rnc head isn’t rocket science. I’d like her to just kick some soggy repub butt now, regardless of how.
I saw Fred Thompson up close and personnal at the Tri-Cities Airport(Bristol,Tn,Bristol,Va,Kingsport,Tn) Rally Stop on Nov. 3, 2008.
I was able to see him for about an hour. Fred is not up to the job - tired, old, doesn’t look well. I am 73 and know an old guy when I see one. I wasn’t impressed by John McCain,Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman either.
We need someone like Mitt Romney - but a Conservative.
Good idea! He is smart, articulate, and drives the Dems crazy!
btt
I actually believe that about Fred being too old and tired. He doesn’t project health at all. Too bad.
