Thompson emerges as potential leader as GOP moves rightward [Fred for RNC chair?]

Republicans desperate to rebuild their party are looking for a new leader, and former Sen. Fred Thompson may seek the job.

Thompson, a Tennessee conservative and former actor, is mulling a run for chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Though he ran a lackluster campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, he remains popular in his party because of his ability to articulate conservative values in a plainspoken way.

“Fred isn’t looking to run for national office again,” a close Thompson adviser said, adding that no official decision had been made. “He is looking to rebuild the party and help elevate the [conservative] movement and its principles.”

While the Republican National Committee considers who will take the helm when the term of the current chairman, Mike Duncan of Kentucky, ends in January, conservatives in Congress are already working to re-brand their party.

And how exactly, in your estimation, did he “handle” it ? Since I was following it very closely, as he was my Senator, I’m interested in your take.

Thompson supported McCain's campaign finance reform.

How effective would he be for fund-raising when he believes in money limits?

I’m with you! Newt gets things done...not all of them good, but they’re all finished.

I fear I share your view, but with the added directives of “far from here and quickly!”

I like him a lot, but he simply wasn't there when we needed him. I think there comes a time in every man's life when he no longer welcomes new challenges. I think Fred is there.

I would not outrightly oppose him in the position, but I think there are possible others who could do more for the cause at this point.

No, Sarah needs to be running for office, her talents need to be in the legislative/executive stream, not in the management of a political party.

To win in 2010, the Republican Party will need a national agenda that is organized from the top down, and the ground up. I know Newt has wandered off the reservation a few times, on a few issues, but he has been through this before. I like Fred, donated to his campaign, but the energy wasn’t there, and we are going to need lots of energy.

I think it’s all gonna come together. Along with Fred and new leaders like Sarah Palin, Michael Steele, Bobby Jindal, Eric Cantor, Lynn Swann, Mike Pence, et al, It’s gonna all come together.

Newt is great... but let’s give the job to someone who’s been jobbed twice:
Dino Rossi of Washington State.
Should have been governor of Washington, and matches what the RNC needs: someone to FIGHT all the vote fraud going on! He’ll get it from day one how important it is that we secure our elections.
Plus, his book was good.

His wife, Jeri, started TeamSarah.org and is keeping it up and running for her in case she will run in 2012. If you remember, Jeri was a big influence in Fred’s race. Fred Thompson being chair of the RNC might be a good thing for Sarah.

More like “Go To Hell, Fred.” Fred did nothing but suck the little remaining oxygen in the room away from the alternatives to McCain, weak as they were (Romney, Huckabee). He talked a good talk, but never walked.

No. Sorry, but we need new blood, young blood, and above all, someone who is aggressive to the point of being irritating. I'm not sure even Newt fits this. We all laughed at Howard Dean. Well, guess what? Howie the Scream went on offense and hasn't let up yet.

Above all, I want someone who has read and intends to implement "Rules for Radicals."

"I’d rather it be Newt."

Not Newt. He has proven himself a CINO. He was pro-bailout...Read the following from an article thread:

"In desperation, conservative radio talk-show host Laura Ingraham touts former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as a source of new ideas. But he is hardly a profile in courage. Gingrich was against the bailout plan until, on September 29, he issued a statement in favor of it. Then, in an article for Human Events on October 7, he called it “bad” and stated, “If Senator McCain is not prepared to separate himself from the Bush-Paulson economic program, he has no opportunity to win. The country is deeply fed up with the Bush presidency and angry about the Paulson bailout.”

Before it became fashionable to advocate more oil drilling, Gingrich was appearing with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in an Al Gore-financed global warming ad. Until gas prices started rising, Gingrich had been an advocate of “green conservatism” and was proposing a Gore-like “Contract with the Earth.”

In addition to his flip-flops, Gingrich has a well-known history of personal “indiscretions” that should disqualify him from any public role in a movement that purports to advocate traditional moral values.

Fred is the past. Yes he needs to go - - go far away. Man takes hours to decide which white shirt to wear. Thank you for your service Fred but we are moving on. You were a starter candidate.

No Newt in leadership roles. He rolled over and then he sat on the bench with San Fran Nan. Newt is OVER.

When the bailout fiasco hit, Fred was the only one speaking out against it and articulating actual conservative principles. If McCain had followed Fred’s lead, he would be president today.

We don’t need a shrill Howard Dean, we need someone who can channel Reagan Reagan, and that’s Fred.
