Thompson emerges as potential leader as GOP moves rightward [Fred for RNC chair?]

Republicans desperate to rebuild their party are looking for a new leader, and former Sen. Fred Thompson may seek the job.

Thompson, a Tennessee conservative and former actor, is mulling a run for chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Though he ran a lackluster campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, he remains popular in his party because of his ability to articulate conservative values in a plainspoken way.

“Fred isn’t looking to run for national office again,” a close Thompson adviser said, adding that no official decision had been made. “He is looking to rebuild the party and help elevate the [conservative] movement and its principles.”

While the Republican National Committee considers who will take the helm when the term of the current chairman, Mike Duncan of Kentucky, ends in January, conservatives in Congress are already working to re-brand their party.

I would like to see him in the post too. I know he has his detractors here ‘bouts, but you can't point out anyone who has done as much for the conservative cause as he did with his work in the mid-90’s.

If we (The Papal “we”, not you and me) would have stood with him when the trouble started it would have been a different ending. One thing about the Dems when they are out of power, they will stop at nothing to get it back. I dislike the bastards one and all, but I've got to give them credit for knowing how to circle the wagons. Out attempt to circle the wagons ends up looking like a huge question mark made out of poorly aligned wagons.

The only way we are going to unseat the power base that's poised now to take over in Jan. is with someone who is willing to fight. To take names, name names and kick ass. If we don't find the spirit for an all out offensive our country is doomed.

We've got to get back the schools, at least that part that teaches American history, and re-kindle the spirit that made America the greatest nation in history.

Right now I'm hunkering down for a depressing period in my life. I can hardly imagine the ill that will come from this new group.

Thankfully, I am having a hip replaced tomorrow and that should take my mind off politics for a few days or so. It was that or Wild Turkey.

Fred was about the only one taking a conservative stand on the issue.

If you look at pics of Fred during his run he appeared haggard, thin, pale and constantly in shirts that looked to big for him. I think that he was either suffering from a recurrence of his cancer or was being affected by the treatment or it’s ramifications. Since then , Fred has really perked up and looks terrific.

If Fred Thompson runs the RNC just like how he ran for the ‘08 Presidency, then I don’t really want him to head the RNC!

Thompson is as conservative as he good buddy, John McCain. He voted to scuttle the Contract with America, and pushed McCain-Feingold through! He is also soft on amnesty for illegals. No way, Jose!

Our RNC Chairman must be a Conservative thru and thru. It must be a person with charisma.

That critera eliminates - Arnold Schart..., Bill Clinton, Fred Thompson, etc.

Who might fit? Sarah Palin, ???

By the way whats the problem with FR web Site??? Couldn’t log all afternoon.

If we don’t lose the ‘nice guy’ part of conservatism, we are never going to win anything. We need a conservative version of that Rahme ??? fellow. Bold, agressive, don’t take ‘No’ for an answer.

And if our elected R’s don’t grow a spine and get ready to play ‘rip off the head and burn the body’ politics, we are screwed also. Comity and courtesy have gotten us nowhere. We need to start negotiating like the muslim; ‘we are going to kill you; nothing you offer will change that’.

(rant off)

I’d rather see Newt at the helm.

When he dropped out only three days after Hunter did, I knew he was only in there as a spoiler for a conservative, and the only conservative running was Duncan Hunter.

I’d rather it be Newt.”

Same here.

Wouldn’t Sarah be blocked from being a candidate if she were RNC chair?

I want Fred to be her campaign mgr/co person.

Newt is a fighter and really knows the ropes. He did a great job with the Contract with America. I wish he were back on Congress but as head of the RNC he could help restructure - which we need badly.

I think Newt did an outstanding job with the "contract" but I don't know what the RNC chair would have to do to turn things around. What are the duties, what power does the chair have? Will Newt be accepted by the various groups?

Could be...considering they’re friends...but I don’t think so. Thompson is about the only true high profile Conservative available, and he wouldn’t be promoting a Global Warming Lie, like others who are considering this position.

The MSM and the independents/democrats that are allowed to vote in many state primaries chose Senator McCain for us.

I think he's the guy...at least as far as I'm concerned. IMHO, he's REASONABLE.. which seems to be a rarity in DC.

I could be wrong, yet I sure don't see anyone else around I'd like to see in that position. Newt, maybe..I just like him.

Wow! Now you're cooking with gas! Man would I love to see him in charge of something with the potential of damaging the Dems!

I wouldn't mind see Ollie North doing something to bolster our cause either!
