Chicago Democrat Barack Obama did what at one time seemed politically impossible: win throughout the suburban region long considered home base for the GOP.
In DuPage County, where Republicans for decades have counted on strong turnout to boost the GOP ticket, Obama won 54 percent of the vote with 99 percent of the precincts in. To put Obama's early, unofficial total in DuPage County in perspective, his more than 224,000 votes there are nearly as many votes as Ronald Reagan received there in his 1984 landslide over Democrat Walter Mondale.
Not only are Obama's votes the most a Democrat has ever received in Dupage, it's within a couple thousand votes of being the most votes any presidential candidate has received there.
Similar tales of turnout for Obama were being told across suburban election offices.
In Kane County, 52 percent of voters sided with Obama.
Will County's Obama turnout was nearly 56 percent.
Suburban Cook County voters turned out nearly 2:1 for Obama, who had more than 66 percent of the vote.
Obama won more than 59 percent of the unofficial vote in Lake County, becoming the first Democratic presidential nominee to win there since Bill Clinton's razor's edge win over Republican Bob Dole in 1996.
Obama tallied nearly 52 percent of the vote in McHenry County to John McCain's 46 percent. In comparison, this county delivered more than 76 percent of its vote for Reagan back in 1984 and has constantly delivered consistent margins for Republicans until this election.

Obama was the presidential candidate from Illinois. Of course he was going to carry a lot of support from both parties in Illinois.
Rubin was the architect of the strong dollar policy in the early 90’s under Clinton. He is dangerous.
You bet Rubin is dangerous as will be the rest of the One’s inner circle. We are going to have a hell of a ride.
I don’t think this election is any sort of turning point that indicates a sharp leftward shift in the electorate. Can we all agree that despite his many shortcomings, Barack Obama is an exceptional politician? That’s all this is.
People whom I know to be rock-ribbed free market conservatives voted for Obama because they were eager to vote for a black man - for the historical significance, because Obama is a master at appearing perfectly moderate and reasonable, and because his message inspired them.
We know that in general, the American voter is a lazy sort - not willing to look under the hood, so to speak. Obama looks good and sounds good. Plus, if we elect him we can pat ourselves on the back for having proved once and for all that America is no longer a racist country.
And McCain was not an attractive enough alternative. You have to work at liking McCain. It’s easy to like Obama. That’s why he won. Not because we are becoming a left-leaning populace.
This was a one-of-a-kind election. I don’t think it’s permanent.
What will be permanent is the damage to our Republic.
ATLAS BARFED
Enjoy what happens to your 401Ks, suckers.
“First they came for the $250K earners, and I didn’t speak because I wasn’t a $250K earner.
“Then they came for the $200K earners...”
Don’t ANY of you find ANY of this Republican-rich county-specific data QUESTIONABLE?
I can't disagree with you on that point.
The ACORN effect....
“Obama was the presidential candidate from Illinois. Of course he was going to carry a lot of support from both parties in Illinois.”
Our 16th and arguably our BEST President, Abraham Lincoln, from Springfield, IL just turned over in his grave...
“I dont think this election is any sort of turning point that indicates a sharp leftward shift in the electorate. Can we all agree that despite his many shortcomings, Barack Obama is an exceptional politician?”
Please step away from the Kool-Aid.
Think for a few seconds and pull your sh** together. We need to make a commitment. If you don’t know/care what that commitment is, I have 2 words for you: JOHN GALT.
It’s time to end our addiction to the liberals who prey on us.
“I dont think this election is any sort of turning point that indicates a sharp leftward shift in the electorate.”
We just elected the most liberal Senator in the Republic, in fact a self-described admirer of Marxist sociopolitical philosophy, as our Liar-in-Chief.
How can you say that this does NOT represent a bee-line toward our nation adopting a distinctly leftist political philosophy?!
A lot of those Republicans who voted for 0bama voted Dim straight ticket.
I do. The whole situation reeks. I think that this is massive fraud and the Repubs are afraid to say it. Why aren’t there any recounts or challenges about this?
I hear you, brother. I feel like a man without a country.
And I am not ashamed that I am a similar vintage as you, and I still choke up and shed a tear when I sing America the Beautiful, God Bless America, or the Star Spangled Banner.
(So do the folks near me. I’m not that great a singer!)
How does your rich, captalist brother explain his conversion to Democrat?
I came to a conclusion last evening.
I don’t LIKE what MY country has now become.
It’s politics no longer suit me.
I’m actually quite certain we’ve just witnessed a nation that come next election will no longer be sovreign.
I am FULLY expecting Mexico’ northern boundary to merge with that of the southwestern U.S. and Canada being given no choice, but to merge its borders with ours on either side too. There is NOTHING to prevent this now.
Were the Chavez owned voting machines used there?
