VIENNA, Austria -- She was a stranger, and she kissed me. Just for being an American.
It happened on the bus on my way to work Wednesday morning, a few hours after compatriots clamoring for change swept Barack Obama to his historic victory. I was on the phone, and the 20-something Austrian woman seated in front of me overheard me speaking English.
Without a word, she turned, pecked me on the cheek and stepped off at the next stop.
Nothing was said, but the message was clear: Today, we are all Americans.
For longtime U.S. expatriates like me - someone far more accustomed to being targeted over unpopular policies, for having my very Americanness publicly assailed - it feels like an extraordinary turnabout.
Like a long journey over a very bumpy road has abruptly come to an end.
And it's not just me.
An American colleague in Egypt says several people came up to her on the streets of Cairo and said: "America, hooray!" Others, including strangers, expressed congratulations with a smile and a hand over their hearts.
Another colleague, in Amman, says Jordanians stopped her on the street and that several women described how they wept with joy.

We’ll see how long this fantasy honeymoon with this Marxist poseur lasts.
Well, Bill Kole, will you like it just as much when queers start giving you little kisses, too?
I ALWAYS!!!!! HAVE BEEN COOL AS AN AMERICAN ANY WHERE I GO!!!!!
So what do we think... will this new love of America last 24 hours, or will we all be surprised and it lasts 48...? /sarcasm off
“Good one.”
Yeah, I was pretty proud of that post.
This love-America-fest is going to last until Obama says one word that some muslim terrorist or French waiter doesn’t like. After that, it’s back on the attack...
I was thinking the same thing. If they want a black presdent or PM so bad why don’t they elect one, or a Morrocan, a Turk, Pakistani or Hindu?
I’d rather be feared than loved.
We had a president who wasn’t a good speaker, and now we have a terrible president who can make crowds swoon.
To the rest of the world, I’m sorry. We’re better than this. Just hold on, and you probably want to up your defense budgets a bit. Times are going to get rocky.
This putz thinks its over!
One of the more remarkable things concerning this latest election cycle is the foot stomping, purple-face-fit utter childishness displayed by the left.
Ditto that.
If Obama really believes this, he's more of a fool than I thought.
A large percentage of the world's population wants America to fail. The more predatory countries out there, like Russia and Iran, are licking their chops at having this naive child in the White House. So, yes, many people are happy abroad- happy because electing Hussein has weakened us.
The people who are our friends in the world? They're not celebrating. Today, countries like Israel or Iraq are trying to figure out what their future holds now that they can no longer count on the US. We'll see Israel hitting the Iranian nuclear facilities in the next couple of months. They have no choice, because they know Hussein won't do anything to stop Iran from getting nukes.
Just dropped in to say “puke.”
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Obama to say such a word...
It’s cool to be an American abroad and defend your country to the Socialist Euro-weenies in street side cafes. People I met in this way almost always left with a more favorable view of Americans. How cool will Americans be when we are as weak and dependent as they are?
Interesting point of view, my Foreign Travels have been somewhat limited to countries we’ve been busy keeping free from Islamist Tyranny, but the people there seemed to think we were pretty cool to have around. This being prior to the election of the anointed one.
She was trying to score some blow, she figured all Americans were crack dealers now since they elected one.
