Sarah Palin could wind up in Washington serving with John McCain after all -- in the U.S. Senate.
Here's the scenario making the rounds of arch-conservative groups strongly in the Palin camp:
After their expected loss today, Palin goes back to being governor of Alaska and McCain remains a U.S. Senator (his term ends in 2011).
But Ted Stevens, the Alaskan Republican senator convicted recently of corruption, is still up for re-election as of today.
Here's where Palin and the Senate come in:
If Stevens wins, he could either step down on his own (unlikely, given his pugnacious personality) or the U.S. Senate could expel him in 2009.
Then, Alaska would hold an election to choose a new senator.
And, in this version at least, the oh-so-popular Palin would run and win a seat in the U.S. Senate

It would be great to see her go to Washington and start naming names. Call out the Democrats for causing this Economic crisis. Call out the Democrats for any BS they try to legislate.
She already has a great record of reform even in 2 years as a Governer, more wont make that much of a difference. In the Senate she can sponsor Special Needs legislation and push for ANWR drilling.
I think she’s in a much better position as Governor of Alaska than a junior senator in the minority party.
I think someone who can stand up in the Senate is more important right now to stop the Reid/Pelosi onslaught that they have in mind. With who is left in the Republican camp, just how many have the intestional fortitude to stand up and fillibuster which could be alot and maybe needed alot and take heat for not being bipartisan when bipartisan is not what is needed on some issues. Someone who can have a Down’s baby can do that. Strong backbone in the Senate and the House is now far more important then a Governorship to balance out power. Name the person in Alaska who can do that. You can go to the bank on Reid coming after Stephens, he already has tried. Why make an issue of it and and invite a Dem takeover at the next election of that Senate place too.
Sarah will be the first female POTUS
Makes no sense for her to run for Senator. Being governor is a much more important job and you can actually get something done. Being a back-bench senator from Alaska with no seniority and no ambition to be a big porker — that’s not the profile of a senator.
I think she should appoint Joe the Plumber to finish up Stevens’ term.
She shouldn’t soil herself by being in that Senate
being a back bench senator with no senority means nothing, why you can be president, look at obama. . . and joe the plumber is in ohio and that state needs massive clean up for voter fraud. the onslaught if it goes too far in the first 100 days is something to be fearful of and can you assure me that we have some fillibusting types who can hold their own in the Senate??? Just how strong are those who are left???? They haven’t seen pressure yet like what is coming
yup! then she can come back and run in 2012:)
Good point.
Great post!
Obama/Biden vs. Palin/Jindal 2012
Palin/Jindal is a winnng ticket!
No, Sarah needs to remain a governor so that she keeps her power base and her state organization intact. Senators inevitably become corrupted by the DC beltway, and 99% NEVER become president. Palin would be doing herself no favors by trying to succeed Stevens.
Agree. As I’ve said all along, her experience as Governor is far more significant than the other 3 as Senators. I’d hate to see her “diluted” be being “demoted” to Senator.
I may even consider moving to Alaska!
Outstanding advice! I hope Sarah’s people in Alaska are reading this.
Not sure if having two governors on the ticket is such a good idea.
Excellent post.
We have not seen the last of Sarah Palin!
