While John McCain's campaign has tried to tie its Democratic rival to socialism, one of the Arizona Republican's top surrogates said Barack Obama is not a socialist.
McCain's campaign had seized on Sen. Obamas statements that he plans to spread the wealth around and sought to tie the Illinois Democrat to socialism.
But former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), while arguing that Obamas economic plan is a job-killer, said Monday on CBSs Early Show: You know, I dont think Barack Obamas a socialist. I think a lot of his policies are inspired by the pathway [that] Europe took. I think the idea of having the government take over healthcare and raise taxes on employers is the wrong direction for the country.
Romney, who was the GOP surrogate tasked with appearing on all of the morning talk shows, also said both candidates are terrific men, when asked if the country would be in good hands if the Democrat is elected.
Ill be very concerned about the economy for the country. Ill be concerned that the economy will be in a slow-down or a recession for a longer, deeper period, Romney stated. I'll be concerned about long term, about a president who would raise taxes on businesses and, if you will, through this intimidation, impose unions on small businesses.
I see you aren't linking the "sources" anymore. Its pretty tough to act like a conservative on FR when you are posting Dick Morris and anti-Palin cartoonists along with MSM "rumors" that turn out to be false the next day.
Here are a few questions. Was Nicolle Wallace a former Bush aide the source for the spectator article or some unnamed Romney supporter?
Was Mike Murphey former McCain aide the source for the anti-Fred rumors or some unnamed former Romney supporter?
I know someone who has trained in martial arts for years and he says that competitions and sparring have very little in common with actual street fighting. Not that Republicans should go to the same level as the leftists. But they gotta show some fighting spirit! And no more Mr. Milquetoast."
Now, you know me, lj. I like calling a spade a spade (the reason I like Ann Coulter, though she isn't running for office). But even I must concede that it's tough for Republicans to do it when the MSM gets all over everything they say. And furthermore, the average voter in my area, usually a democrat, doesn't understand the evil that is socialism. When I've said Obama is a socialist, they either laugh in your face or look at you like you're some kind of strange bookworm. It doesn't resonate. But talk of high taxes, and having less stuff and not having the money to attend sporting events like the Phillies games, and more of their money going to immigrants and the dependent class (who won't work), well, THAT gets to them. : )
Thank you for the civil response. : )
Romney on Hillary (2007):
"None of them has ever managed a private enterprise or lead a state, and their solutions would take us in exactly the wrong direction," Mr. Romney said. "Their solutions are Big Brother, big taxes, and big government, and that is not the right answer for America." Later, he told The New York Sun that "in the case of the three Democratic front-runners, none of them has managed a corner store, let alone a state or a city or an enterprise of the nature of the United States."
Mr. Romney referred to recent comments that Mrs. Clinton made about the economy. "She said we have been an on-your-own society.' She said, It's time to get rid of that and replace it with shared responsibility,'" Mr. Romney said. "That's out with Adam Smith and in with Karl Marx." Mr. Romney advocated lowering corporate and personal income taxes as well as a freeze on taxes on savings accounts.
Like your Master to whom you bow, and for whom you lie,
I never did post an anti-Palin cartoon, did I?
You are a liar.
I have supported Gov. Palin since before Sen McCain
correctly chose her, and during the time Mitt Romney
and your catty, coveting, cohorts attacked Gov. Palin’s
children.
You also lie about the alleged “rumors” which have
been confirmed by papers, periodicals, reporters,
TV networks, and people, who all show that you
and Romney are are a danger to conservatives and America.
On THAT we are in TOTAL agreement and I said the same today. With his proposal for a civilian military, visions of the brown shirts come quite prominently to mind.
Yeah I follow the opinion of the Acts of the Apostles as found in the Bible on this one. The question is what opinion are you following when you call the Biblical practice of having "all things in common" socailist?
“it was assumed that socialism meant state ownership of the means of production. By that standard Europe isn’t socialist.”
I beg to differ...
What does “own” mean? One of the dictionary definitions (which I argue is the applicable definition when you’re talking about the capitalist system of economics), is “To have control over.”
And clearly the Europeans and the US liberals exercise control over the means of production with their hare brained regulatory schemes, so in that sense, the government does own the means of production. Of course, they don’t exercise complete control over it, but in order to muck up the capitalist system, you don’t need to have complete control. All you’ve got to do is prevent the individual proprietors from running their businesses they way they want to in order to maximize their profits, and when you do that, you’ve effectively sabotaged the capitalist system as much as if you took complete control over the business.
I guarantee you that this is not lost on the Europeans. They understand that their systems are socialist.
Diogeneis is being honest here. His number one pick for VP was Governor Sarah Palin, and he was pushing for her long before she was actually picked, and was ecstatic when the announcement was made.
The quotes prove that Myth Romney was caught saying the both contrary, mutually exclusive, statements.
An organization through which the {Latter Day} Saints in the early days of the restored Church sought to live the law of consecration. Individuals shared property, goods, and profits, receiving these things according to their wants and needs (D&C 51: 3; 78: 1-15; 104).
The bolded section sounds suspiciously like:....
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need"
Maybe Karl Marx learned his ideas of Government from Joseph Smith, huh?
About 2 weeks ago, Romney was talking the same smack on CNN. Mitt, go back to Massachusetts and STFU.
More evidence of what a worthless RINO Willard is.
There are better ways to describe Obama that are not as easily contradicted: “socialistic,” “Marxist,” “spreading the wealth,” “going down the road to socialism,” “following Europe's path to socialistic policies,” “killing jobs,” “punishing hard work and success,” etc.
True enough. But is what you get socialism or just a mucked-up capitalism? If you can't fix the economy, it may be socialism. If you can, is it still socialism? If Saab or Fiat turns a profit for its shareholders and competes with other manufacturers isn't what you have something different from a truly socialist society?
I guarantee you that this is not lost on the Europeans. They understand that their systems are socialist.
Take a good look at Volkswagen or BMW and then at Lada or at the Trabi makers. The products are different. The companies that made them are also different in kind. As are the societies that made those cars.
I can understand that the lines here aren't always clear. Maybe you can call Scandinavia socialist without the state owning everything. My point, though, was that you may want to call Germany or France socialist, but most informed people around when Romney was growing up wouldn't. They'd recognize that the difference between, say, East and West Germany, was greater than the difference between the US and West Germany.
See #110 & # 116.
I agree with you. I hate it when pubbies say thing's like their opponents are terrific, nowadays they never are. Democrats are creeps and there are few if any exceptions. But come now, do ya honestly think pubbies would get away with,"hes a horrible, evil lying racist marxist person who, AFAIAC, is practically demoniac!"? : )
I always thought your master was the Good Lord, RG. Wow, the hyperbole 'round here, like the Mitt hatred, is way over the top.
mitt “The Git” romney : ex-governor, current idiot.
