I Have Lost a Friend Over the Election

Posted on 10/29/2008 2:12:34 PM PDT by libertarian9

I have been an Independent for most of my life but this year I registered as a Republican.

A have a friend who I've known for 22 years. He is an Obama supporter.

He has ended our friendship because I am supporting McCain and not Obama.

He has gone so far as to say that I'm not the person he thought I was all these years. I am angry and sad and a little stunned.

Anyone else having similar experiences over the election?

This may be a silly question- but can said friend articulate the thinking which led to his position?

I just blew up at my golf partner at lunch today. He says out of the blue “I don’t know, I just like Obama.” He thinks this is like the Cubs/Sox rivalry where we all just root for our favorite. I asked his thoughts on the thuggery that BO has already shown to anyone- a reporter who asks a question (how dare they!) an average citizen who asks a question- anything that BO doesn’t want spoken.

Talk about gestapo like!

I asked his thoughts on the fairness doctrine- nevver heard of it.
I asked who takes the most money from fannie/Freddie (has never in his life heard the name “Chris Dodd.)
Asked what he thinks of the consequences of gay marriage laws- school children being taught gay sex and parents can not even opt out because it is LAW- churches FORCED to do gay weddings opr face “discrimination” law suits. He knew nothing of it.

I went on and on in the hopes that he at least realizes that he is astonishingly ignorant.

I closed by saying flat out- you are to stupid to vote!

But then we took our daily wake in the fresh air and went back to work.

This is America, and if you had a so-called friend to broke ties with you over a political difference of opinion, then it was not a friend s/he was seeking, but someone to support his beliefs.

Democrats are a very up-tight people, full of angst and prone to violently defending their flawed view of the world.

Whenever I find that I have a "my way or the highway" friend...I'll take the highway, everytime.

Liberals love groups...they are nothing without their groups...and I never wanted to be a groupie.

Should read:

And the friends you have here believe in individual rights and freedom. Leave the socialists behind.

Sorry for the brain drain moment.

Then he's a shi'itehead of a friend.

I'm not the person he thought I was all these years.

This sounds like some kansas city faggoty liberal who's breaking up with you.

Good riddance man.

Sometimes the price of being principled is the loss of acceptance from those around us.

It is worth the cost...always.

Why were you hanging out with a lib in the first place? Would you hang with a child rapist? Take them to lunch? Cripes!

This election has prompted me to tune out a bit of noise. I have a few old friends that now have their emails go straight to my JUNK folder. I can’t take their negativity and blind support of ()bama. We haven’t had much in common since the real world came calling. By real world, I mean the place that I went where I had to work for money, got married, had a family, and had to care about things that seemed unhip when I was nineteen.

I come from a large, liberal Democrat family.

Sometime during Bubba’s second term, I committed the unforgivable sin of choosing to view reality with my own two eyes.

In not too long a time, I dug a hole under the hypno fence of the liberal plantation and made my escape.

The family now thinks that I’ve been taken by the “dark forces”. They still try to save me from time to time, but mostly, they howl and scream when I email them factual data about the political scene.

And yes, they’re all Obamabots.

See post #58

My oldest won’t even discuss this with me. My youngest made out like she knew WTH has going on with little or no research. I busted her, but didn’t change her mind.

You signed up a couple of weeks ago and posted a story about how you both went through the Clinton years and NEVER had enough of a conversation that might reveal your differences?

My brother-in-law (a Navy vet) has implied that my wife is a racist for not supporting the One. He does live in California, which may explain it.

Usually it's best to find out this kind of stuff before you two start having sex.

Believe me. You did not have a friend. You had a self-centered parasite who was only in it for him or herself.

You are better off without that “friend”.

“Welcome to Freerepublic. Are you guys writing a book over at DU about how you all cleverly tried to solidify your stereotypes about us and what we might say?”

I agree, seems trollish.

Happens every election -- wheat and chaff kind of thing.

I'd have to question any "friend" with an affinity for a communist, muslim terrorist sleeper-agent, crack-smoking homo.

I was standing in my sister’s kitchen with her liberal friends and when I said that I admired Sarah Palin a gay neighbor spit a mouthful of vodka on me. He said he didn’t know he was going to do that. I think we’ll all remember our courage during this election.

Sorry, but if he ended your friendship over politics, he probably wasn’t your friend.

I have lots of democrat friends.

But they are the dems who cling to God and guns.

They support the troops even though they may have been against our going to Iraq.

I don’t know how they are voting, but I am sure that they know that I would not be voting for Obama.

So, no, I’m not losing any friends. I think people who are dumping friends over their vote are UNHINGED.

yes!

It really isn’t a loss, although it might seem so now. I find I have very VERY little in common on core values with libs

Yes we may share interests/activities but NOT true friendship. When the going gets tough, the tough get going! -— as the old saying goes

Go to the GOP hdqtrs to work the next few days....there you will find a pool of people to be potential friends!
